Re: Mismarketed Movies
I recall being very confused by the ads for Disney's "The Three Musketeers" back when that came out. There seemed to be three different sets of ads, one marketing it as a comedy, one as a romance, and one as an action movie.

Re: Mismarketed Movies
... and about this thread: I love the discussion. I completely agree about Adventureland, Funny People, The Village, and Lady in the Water.
I'd also add to that list Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. While it captures some of the charm of the film if you've seen it, the trailers don't establish the characters enough to make you as interested.

At least this trailer was completely honest about what to expect:
<object width="640" height="505"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/ekXxi9IKZSA?fs=1&hl=en_US&hd=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/ekXxi9IKZSA?fs=1&hl=en_US&hd=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="640" height="505"></embed></object>

I have to say, I've only seen TV spots for it during shows like Burn Notice and Covert Affairs. Methinks someone was trying to lure the spy viewing demographic by promising a big screen version of the elements they were already watching on TV.

Most recently, I thought Defendor was mismarketed too much to be like a similar version of Kick-Ass.

They often make different trailers depending on which movie the trailer appears before. Check out the Braveheart dvd. One action trailer to show before action movies. Another trailer justs shows the love story stuff to show before chick flicks.

Every trailer I've seen for Despicable Me is completely different. In one, a little boy is the main character. In another, it's some weird looking Eastern European guy. In another, it's a bunch of yellow Oompa Loompa things. I have no idea what the movie is actually about.

The absolute worst I can recall is Cold Creek Manor.
<object width="560" height="315"><param name="movie" value="//www.youtube.com/v/Hg0EWsjuXDk?hl=en_US&version=3"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="//www.youtube.com/v/Hg0EWsjuXDk?hl=en_US&version=3" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="560" height="315" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>
The trailer is edited to infer the movie is a haunted house/supernatural type movie, when in fact it's just a standard 'realistic' thriller.

I remember Georgia Rule being marketed at the feel-good comedy that moms and daughters could see together on Mother's Day.
It was an over the top drama focusing on the torment of Lindsay Lohan being raped in the past. Beyond fucked up -- especially on Mother's Day. No wonder it bombed.

Home Fries was marketed as a feel good rom-com. Turns out it was a black comedy.

From the description on the back, it sounds like a couple trapped in a motel and being attacked by shit load of bugs. In reality, it's just like what you described.
I will say Dead Presidents. I bought the DVD many years ago because the cover, pictures on the back, and description make you think the entire movie is about a robbery. Instead, that robbery is maybe the last 20 minutes of the film. Nowhere does it mention the movie being about black people trying to fit back into society after the Vitenam War.

I managed a Blockbuster when this movie hit DVD, and I can't even begin to imagine how many customers wanted a refund or complained to my staff over the movie.
