Weekend Box Office (8/27-8/29): The Dregs of August edition

From Deadline Hollywood:

2. The Takers (Screen Gems/Sony) NEW [2,206 Theaters]

3. The Expendables (Lionsgate) Week 3 [3,398 Theaters]
Friday $2.7M (-45%), Estimated Weekend $8.2M, Estimated Cume $81M

4. Eat Pray Love (Sony) Week 3 [3,108 Theaters]

5. The Other Guys (Sony) Week 4 [3,181 Theaters]

6. Vampires Suck (Fox) Week 2 [3,233 Theaters]

7. The Switch (Miramax) Week 2 [2,017 Theaters]
Friday $1.4M (-46%), Estimated Weekend $, Estimated Cume $

8. Inception (Warner Bros) Week 7 [2,070 Theaters]

9. Piranha 3D (Dimension/Weinstein Co) Week 2 [2,491 Theaters]
Friday $1.3M (-63%), Estimated Weekend $, Estimated Cume $

10. Nanny McPhee Returns (Working Title/Universal) Week 2 [2,798 Theaters]
Friday $1.3M (-50%), Estimated Weekend $, Estimated Cume $

No one knew what to expect of Fox's re-release of Jim Cameron's Avatar: Special Edition, with an extra 9 minutes of footage, into 812 IMAX and 3D theaters in the U.S. and Canada. It placed just out of the Top 10 with $1.2M and a new domestic cume of $751M.

***************************************************

Rough numbers, obviously, but it looks like the marketing for Last Exorcism worked on people. That means we can continue to look forward to more shitty PG-13 horror, not that that's news to anyone. And how did something as horrendous looking as Takers manage $20m? At least Expendables is sitting pretty, though I'm not sure it can squeeze out $100m. I wish it would, though.

I'm thinking Exorcism might fall even more today. Apparently got a D cinemascore.

Expendables will probably lurch to about 90, and probably tack on another 100 with international, bringing it's total to the neighborhood of 200 million. Definitely not bad for it.

Can the Weinsteins retract their Piranha 2 (3D) press release? They'll be lucky to hit 4 million the second weekend.

I guess I'll have to see Pirahna 3D this week before its gone in theatres. I hope the Expendables makes it to 100 million, that way we will see a sequel.

I see it getting to about 95 domestic, I'm expecting a pretty robust international gross though.. I'd like to see it hit 250 worldwide.

Can anyone believe that Cats and Dogs 2 has made 75 million?

Wow, I didn't think that title would translate internationally. - Then again the original did $100 million internationally.

It does look like it's international release opening are almost done... That will about cap its box office numbers. I wonder if this turkey will even break even with the DVD/Blu-ray release. (The budget without marketing/prints was $85 million)

So the A-Team was a "flop" with $77 million but the Expendables is a hit if it reaches $90 million? I guess expectations are different for each... Not sure what the budget difference is though.

A-Team had a budget of $110m, whereas Expendables was in the $60-80m range.

I'm fairly certain he was being sarcastic, but it still didn't make the top 10.

According to Deadline, Last Exorcism dropped a whopping 25% of business on Saturday and will end up with about $21 mil. Probably will have a huge drop next weekend.

Well, Cats and Dogs is witty and awesome - except when the humans are around. I haven't watched it since it was in theaters (almost ten years ago). But I certainly remember liking it a lot.

Re: Weekend Box Office (8/27-8/29): The Dregs of August edition

I saw Takers last night on a whim because I've seen everything else remotely interesting, but wow what a terrible film. I was able to guess most of the plot in the first 20 minutes of the movie.

The theater was packed to the gills with young kids though which is what this movie was aimed towards so it doesn't surprise me it did decent. I expect a huge drop off next weekend though.

this generation's Heat

I had to laugh when I saw that on the TV ad. It looks horrible. I do however think The Town looks like it had potential.

Wow, The Last Exorcism dropped off so much from Friday to Saturday to Sunday that it actually didn't win the weekend. Takers has the top spot and Last Exorcism took #2. Will be interesting to see how much it sinks next weekend.
