Yeah, but the OP asked for U.S. movies set in Japan, not filmed there. In any event, I think NIHM Rat's list ought to keep him busy for a while!

This, I believe, is the first instance of anyone professing to find any part of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III "funny."

I thought it was funny. But "aweee, pathetic" funny. Not "haha" funny.

I remember seeing this as a kid and being so sad with how bad it was.

It didn't even open at a first-run theater here; we had to go to the second-run theater, with its flypaper floors and skeletal chairs. Not only was the movie disappointing, but the whole time we were there was uncomfortable. I've since come around on the movie some, but it won't be advancing up my Flickchart rankings anytime soon.

Isn't set in japan. It's in China during the Japanese occupation of Shanghai.

That's a bit of a stretch, don't you think? And I know of about a billion Chinese who would take issue with that. And I don't think the handful of Japanese still alive who would support your argument would be much help to you.

It's not as much of a stretch as you think. The Japanese certainly had reason to view the areas they occupied as "theirs" at the time. This wasn't like when Iraq went into Kuwait and did't even have time to print new phone books before the international community contained and then repelled the invading army. The Japanese occupation of China kept expanding over a few years, and momentum favored them for much of the time. Ergo, a film set during that time in an area of China controlled by Japan could reasonably be characterized as being set in "Japanese territory."

This is like saying that Casablanca takes place in Germany.

No. Morocco was a French colony under the control of the Vichy government. Germany itself never claimed control over the colony. You can argue that the Vichy government was, of course, little more than a German puppet, but the distinction stands.

To you it does. However, to most of us, when we talk about films taking place "in" a certain country, we mean that geographic country, not places that country may have temporarily occupied or had control over.

The Patriot and Last of The Mohicans take place in America, not Britain.
Ghandi takes place in South Africa and India, not Britain.
Hard Boiled takes place in Hong Kong, not Britain.

And not China, either, although since 1997 those billion Chinese I referenced above might argue otherwise.

You mean from the wrong perspective?

Honestly, I see where you're coming from, I just don't agree.

Another one not mentioned yet: THREE STRIPES IN THE SUN (1955), about G.I.'s in occupied Japan:
