Outlaw Productions' Deborah Newmyer, who brought Boilerplate to Bad Robot, will produce the project. Here's the description of the project from THR:

"Boilerplate" purports to tell the story of the world's first robot, who, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, fought alongside Teddy Roosevelt and Lawrence of Arabia, journeyed to the South Pole and was involved in the silent movie business before disappearing on the battlefields of World War I.

Guinan initially wrote Boilerplate as a graphic novel, but the character eventually gained popularity on his own website, where the author would post images of the old timey 'bot digitally added into historical photos. Guinan told Comic Book Resources last year:

The graphic novel fell through, but I pursued the web site and started adding to it. It started getting attention[...] It started to get strange when I started to get letters from people who were involved in robotics or history and asking me for more information.

.
I'd never heard of the comic before today. This looks fascinating.

It's not a comic, it's a "mock biography" with lots of faked photos and mock essays/history, and it's a heck of a lot of fun, I've been reading it myself and really enjoying it. Great "fake" history.

I found Boilerplate while walking the floor at Comic Con. Bought a print of a photo of Boilerplate engaged in fisticuffs with a boxer. $10 and the artist signed it for me. Now I discover Abrams bought the rights. I wonder if he saw the Comic Con booth, since he was there for a panel.

I remember this from about ten years ago. I seem to recall that they were having some kind of dispute with a publisher over the rights to this book that was keeping it from being published.

Had no idea they finally sorted it out and got the book out. Sounded interesting at the time; I'll have to hunt it down.

No. From what I've read, whereas Forrest was more a passive observer with some minor influences in history, Boilerplate is a major player in historical events and his participation was "hidden" from the public record.

I really wanna get this book.

It was in the planning before Comic Con.
