Incredibly close call between the two best directors working today. I chose Fincher simply because I consider Fight Club one of the most brilliant movies ever made. But The Prestige is not far behind for me and Nolan's scripts are the most polished in the business.

I think Nolan still has room to grow as a filmmaker.
Despite Heath Ledger, Nolan doesn't always extract the best in his actors the way Fincher does. I've not always loved Fincher's movies, but most of his failures or under-performers have more to do with the scripts than his precision and taut direction. I also think Fincher has a more cinematic touch whereas Nolan doesn't use his camera as creatively as I would like. I think the next set of films will really display how far each director grows.
I think Nolan has not yet reached his peak.

Yeah... of the three David's (Fincher, Cronenberg and Lynch) I think Cronenberg and Lynch could easily out direct Fincher if given say, a phonebook.
There was a small contest between two Japanese directors (Yukihiko Tsutsumi and Ryûhei Kitamura) called the Duel Project back in 2003, these two directors had to make a 70 minute film a piece using specific limitations, primarily "The challenge was for the two directors to see who could make the best feature film with two principal actors/actresses battling in one principal location in the time span of one week." there were other rules in place but that was the main guideline (the movies were 2LDK and Aragami). I always thought it would be cool as hell if they could do that as something of a weekly series (HBO or IFC or something) with that concept, I'd love to see two similar directors tackle similar subject matter and see how different it ends up.
Nolan vs. Rian Johnson, Fincher vs. Chan-wook Park, Alfonso Cuarón vs. Jeff Nichols, Del Toro vs. Peter Jackson match ups would be interesting. Unfortunately these guys are all always busy and no such series exists.

I like David Fincher because he has his own style of making films. He tackles projects that are almost always somewhat uniquely different than his last film. His films have a certain style and are for the most part, rewarding, intelligent cinema. Seven is my favorite from him.
I like Christopher Nolan because he's always challenging himself as a filmmaker. Making each movie bigger than his last. However, I don't necessarily see this as a total positive. I would prefer to see him get back to smaller, dramatic, intelligent films. Memento is my favorite from him.
Unlike say Paul Thomas Anderson or Joel and Ethan Coen, I think with Fincher and Nolan their greatest achievements were long ago. I will still look forward to anything they put out but to me, they are not in upper tier of active directors.

LOL whatever. He can have his opinion. No one is taking it away from him. Like I said in the previous post when did it become an issue to say someones opinion is wrong. It's another way of saying I don't agree with his opinion but stronger. I just think his opinion is wrong.
I guess you can't have one during a Larry Bird v. Tim Duncan debate.

I disagree with an opinion =/= that opinion is wrong.
"Saturn is smaller than the Earth" is wrong. "Saturn is my favorite planet" cannot be right or wrong, because it's an opinion.

Look I'm not going to get into some back and forth nonsense that always seems to occur in these situations. There are so many people that love to bait people into to certain situations on this board A LOT. I would also expect or like to think that the moderator of this site to not contribute situations like this but he seems to do that A LOT. I stand by what I said and will say it again if need be.

If someone said they prefer any of Leone's other films, I wouldn't tell them they're wrong.

So it looks like Fincher will be helming a re-imagining of 20,000 leagues Under the Sea while Nolan directs his new SF film Interstellar. Should make for interesting fodder as these productions come to fruition under their distinctively different styles.
