Re: So long, farewell; the best goodbye scenes
Groucho, you've got very good taste in films, but you're also quite good with the joke/devil's advocate posts. Which is this?
"They melt a machine" is just a flat way of describing it, just like "bar owner gives a plane ticket to his ex" or "they shoot a rabid dog". The T-800 at this point has become not only John's protector and rescuer, but a friend, mentor and father figure. Now he has to sacrifice himself and break the child's heart. It's gutwrenching.
Just as The Dead Zone is masterful in the way that it gets you to sympathize with a crazed political assassin, Terminator 2 makes you care about a machine. It's wonderful.

Wrong.
Wrong again!
At any rate, I think you're overstating it as "one of richest, most soulful endings ever filmed". It was satisfactory, if a bit silly, but it's hardly the emotional experience some are describing.

Speaking of rich, soulful endings, how about Toy Story 3. Unfortunately I can't find a cap of
, but I think that would fit for this project.

I'm not sure what you were trying to do there.

It doesn't work as well, but still gets the message across since the film is all about goodbyes.

For the LOTR screencap I used Boromir's death. The Gray Havens departure is nice and hopeful, but nothing's as personal as a human face.
Thanks for the suggestions so far, folks. I included a couple of nice finales as well as goodbyes. Here's what I have up to now.

I really like the quite farewell at the end of Red Cliff: Part II.

I don't know if you can count it, but Ewan MacGregor walking across the bridge at the end of Trainspotting.

I personally would have gone with "Fly, you fools!" from LOTR, although it may not be entirely appropriate for the task at hand.

OK, at the risk of being "that guy", I have to correct you here (Excalibur is my favorite movie). He isn't being pushed out on the lake...he's being sailed off to the island of Avalon by the three maidens. That is where he will live until the day comes when he is needed as king again (it's a classic Christ metaphor).

Big - when the Tom Hanks character is walking back toward his home and he has changed back into a boy. His clothes are now too big and he's clomping along in shoes that are also too big for him. He turns and waves goodbye to Elizabeth Perkins. (the grown woman he's been f*cking)

Some good choices...How about a shot of James Earl Jones' character or some of the ballplayers fading into the corn in Field of Dreams?
