Self-explanatory. Title pretty much says it all. Who was better as their character?

They both were great imo but my preference goes to Bale for his more subtle, understated work.

Bales great as Wayne and was fine as Batman in BB. He got a little carried away in TDK though with his gruff voice. Downey was perfect in both films though, so I'd give it to him even though I prefer Nolan's films overall.

Bale was pretty annoying as Batman. Then again, I'm not a huge Dark Knight fan, and think Ledger drove that film, and it was otherwise mediocre.

Downey as Iron Man made the movies.

Bale as Batman was good but that damn voice hurt it.

Downey wins, though the Batman movies are vastly superior to the Iron Man ones.

Not a fan of either movie, but I'll give it to Downey, who seems to have made the character his own and transcended the shopworn comic-book plot. The movie definitely perked up whenever he was on screen without the iron mask on. In TDK, Bale seemed to have been overwhelmed by the character. I thought he was fine in BB, though. But still, Downey pulled it off beautifully, probably better than I've seen anybody do a superhero since Reeve in the Superman movies.

Downey was great. Even when just Stark. Enough that I'd be fine watching a whole movie of him being Stark.

Bale was meh. Just like the older movies, the villian characters are more intersting.

Bale is fantastic as Wayne. He's an OK Batman in BB but I let that slide because he was starting out. But then he was worse as Batman in TDK (though he was still great as Wayne).

RDJ managed to embody Tony Stark while still making the role his own. Had they cast another actor, I may have walked out of IM2. The acting is what saved that movie from its terrible script.

Iron Man 2 really blew, and Tony Stark (IMO) is an extremely one-dimensional character. Everything he says is a fucking wise-crack, expecting a laugh. Far more annoying than "gruff voice".

Bale is an actor that only seems to work well in smaller scale films for me. Thrown him in something big budget, and it's as though all of his natural talents go right out the window.

I would say the exact opposite. Bale's Wayne was pretty one-dimensional, and his Batman was pretty cringe-worthy for me, especially because of the stuffy-nosed gruff voice.
