So much fun! GO SEE IT :) (if you can)
DVD...November 17. |
Re: Black Dynamite
Wasn't there a bidding war on this at Sundance or something? How did it go from potentially huge to Mike Judge movie in just a few months?

Re: Black Dynamite
Seems to getting a limited theatrical run before it hits DVD like other "genre" films (Grace, Trick 'r Treat, Dead Snow for example).
|
Re: Black Dynamite
The DVD isn't coming out in November, unless it got retitled to Black Soul Dynamite as Sony sold the DVD rights to some company known as Video Asia.
Sony has always intended it to be a platform release. We will see more theaters get the film within the next few weeks. |
Re: Black Dynamite
Amazon's bad then. They have Black Dynamite mixed up with Black Soul Dynamite hehe...

Re: Black Dynamite
I guess expecting this in Hawaii was asking for too much, eh? :)

Re: Black Dynamite
Caught it last night at a half-empty theater in NYC's Upper West Side. This is what "Undercover Brother" and "Grindhouse" (minus the 'phony' trailers) wished they could have been but weren't: a tribute to a dismissed period of cinema that feels like it belongs (and comes from) its era.
But this isn't just a collection of random jokes or stabs at blaxploitation genre cliches without rhyme or reason. There is an actual story (convoluted and non-sensical but it's there, and even allows long scenes that advance the plot to unfold without a single obvious joke), there are real characters (over-the-top and cliche' but not two-dimensional walking cardboards) and there are action/fighting scenes (enhanced via the same seamless green screen/CG technology used in "Kung-Pow" a few years back) that make this an actual blaxpoitation movie that just happens to be funny because it's being so true and respectful to the genre it represents. Michael Jai White looks and inhabits his lead role like he stepped out of the 1970's; it's the best casting for a movie since Christopher Reeve got the Superman/Clark Kent role, and I'm not kidding. Supporting actors really get into their blaxpoitation roles (Arsenio Hall and Tommy Davidson are hilarious in too-brief cameos) but they don't overplay their OTT personalities or overstay their welcome. The way "Black Dynamite" gets around its 'R' rating to sneak in a graphic sex scene is not only genius but ties directly with the movie's best scene in which the 'heroes' crack the code in a cafeteria. And the orphanage scene has to be seen to be believed. :) Only the overblown finale that pushes things way past the breaking point (think "Shoot 'Em Up" and yes, it's that big a misfire) betrays the cinematic illusion that this is a 70's flick that's been rotting in a vault somewhere. I got my $12.50's worth and will gladly wait for the DVD because I'm sure there's a joke or two I missed. The one's that hit the mark are hilarious though. Don't listen to the DVD Talk reviewer on this one (they're usually right but this time he's way off), "Black Dynamite" is a winnah! |
Re: Black Dynamite
For the most part, "Black Dynamite" is a hilarious send-up of the blaxploitation genre, but the film is filled with peaks and valleys, meaning, when it's funny it's really funny, while the valleys come from the transitions from scene to scene at times, but overall, I got a lot of big laughs, laughs I haven't had at the cinema in quite a while, so it gets a recommendation from me. The plot is kind of loopy, but you just roll with it because the film swings for the fences, and connected on more swings than it misses.
I give it 3 stars, or a grade of B. |
Re: Black Dynamite
I loved every minute of it. I agree with the peaks and valleys comment, but still enjoyed it all. A- / B+ Good time at the movies.

That must be a direct cop from Dolemite.

Re: Black Dynamite
Saw this one over the weekend. Oh christ, I haven't laughed this hard in I don't remember how long. Fans of blaxploitation flicks will eat this up. My only real complaints are that the guy who plays Buckhorn was overdoing it a bit too much, and the finale went way beyond where it needed to go, making it more of a joke that it shuld have been. But that gripe aside, this was a hilarious send-up of all those classic 70's films. Think Black Shampoo meets Truck Turner, or something like that.
I'd give it 88 out of 100. |
Re: Black Dynamite
For those in the New England area - incredible news! Coolidge is kicking off a midnight screening schedule beginning 11/13 for Black Dynamite. Sounds like the perfect showcase for a film like this.

Re: Black Dynamite
It's a hollow as hell movie, as most spoofs are, but good god is it hilariously un-pc and awesome.
For some reason, the scene where Black Dynamite is staring at the boom mic near the beginning had me rolling. Everytime his theme song came on? Also awesome. Hell the entire movie is quality. |

Finally caught this today:

"Then tell me who did it and I'll just leave a puddle." BTW, Nicole Ari-Parker was listed in the cast, but I was never able to spot her---And she is quite easy to spot... |
Re: Black Dynamite
I'm not too much a fan of blaxploitation films or even parodies, but this looks good. I'll need to buy this on DVD too.
I'm glad to see Michael Jai White in a new movie. Salli Richardson looks fantastic too. |
Re: Black Dynamite
What's funny is that on FMC, they showed a movie called Trouble Man. I swear, BD lifted shit straight from that film. It's crazy seeing them somewhat side to side to compare and how much of Black Dynamite got it right (other than the over the top fight scene at the end).

Superfly-The "8 Track Stereo in every room" line. The Mack-Both of Dynamite's lines for "Stick himself" and his "Grown folks talking" are from this movie. The pimp-gathering scene is probably inspired from this too. Dolemite-Boom mic shot lol Human Tornado-Bullhorn talking in rhyme And if you've got a quick eye, you can spot some stunt/shoot-out footage from Al Adamson's Dynamite Brothers during the big action montage. |
Re: Black Dynamite
i heard there's going to be an animated series on adult swim before the year is out. anyone know anything about this?
|
Re: Black Dynamite
Im debating about getting the blu ray or dvd. Since the look of the film is intentionally crappy, would this film really benefit from a hd transfer. Id like to save some money and pick up the dvd if i can.

I think Black Dynamite should team up with Hebrew Hammer.

Re: Black Dynamite
I watched this for the umpteenth time this weekend, this time with commentary, and Sanders and White point out almost every film referenced. It's a great track for fans of the film.

Bit late to the party here, but I saw way more nods to specific blacksploitation movies than the four listed here. The pimp gathering, for one, is a direct homage to a sequence in WILLIE DYNAMITE (1974). Black Dynamite's martial arts yell or war cry (or whatever it's called) is a carbon copy of the one used by Jim Kelly in his movies. One line of dialogue that would've jumped out at me even if they hadn't alluded to it in the documentary is lifted wholesale from AVENGING DISCO GODFATHER, although Michael Jai White dials it back considerably here. There are many others I spotted (and many I probably missed); I think the ability to spot them depends heavily on how many of the originals one has seen.

Re: Black Dynamite
This is easily one of the funniest flicks I have seen in a very long time! The scene with the boom mic was hilarious but, later on when BD goes to fight the room full of dudes in the pool hall and his "main man" steps in to take up his slack and "accidently" slaps the hell out of the thug had me howlin'!
|
Re: Black Dynamite
Finally picked the DVD up earlier the week and gave the commentary a listen. Finally found the answer to a question I had earlier:

But the movie managed to be a bit more genius than I thought before. No way would I have caught the militant who reads outloud his script-actions as well as his script-lines. I noticed that this DVD also had different end-credits that appeared after the animation segments (Outtake footage & different music) than the theatrical release. |

The commentary points out that she ended up on the cutting-room floor (Properly keeping in theme with the movie!) but does she appear in the deleted scenes on the disc? Just want to say that I haven't paid more than 9.99 for a blu-ray in a very long time. I bought this for 16.49 at amazon and it was worth every penny |

Those are some of my favorite parts as well. The boom mic was so great especially when he actually looks up at it! Little stuff like that is what makes this so great! |
Re: Black Dynamite
I watched "Super Fly" over the weekend and caught some dialogue bits Jai White used for his speech to the militant we all love so much.
