Neil Gaiman news to make you hate Twilight even more

If anybody could usher in a badass return to form for the vampire genre, it would be Neil Gaiman. Unfortunately, that won’t be happening any time soon. Gaiman recently spoke to The Independent and told them he abandoned his next big novel because it had a vampire in it, and there have been too many vampires lately:
Gawdammitsomuch, Twilight. We could have had a big vampire novel from Neil Gaiman. I know he didn’t name Twilight specifically, but I’m blaming it anyway. Vampires aren’t sparkly, abstinent vegetarians.
“The saddest thing is that it runs the risk of making vampires not scary. I will be glad when the glut is over. Maybe they will be scary again. I like my creatures of the night a little nocturnal,” he said. “My next big novel was going to have a vampire. Now, I’m probably not. They are everywhere, they’re like cockroaches.” He said he hoped that mainstream culture would lose its interest in the undead so that vampire fiction could regain its potency. “Maybe it’s time for this to play out and go away. It’s good sometimes to leave the field fallow. I think some of this stuff is being over-farmed,” he said. [Independent via SciFiWire] |

Moving to Book Talk?
I like Neil Gaiman books and I don't necessarily agree with his thinking... a Neil Gaiman vampire story isn't the same as Twilight. But I do understand his thinking.

I actually agree with him. The market is over saturated as it is. And who know if this might actually make him create something better. I'm rathercomfortable with his reasoning.

Meh, I mean I get what he's saying but why not do it anyway and make it kick ass?
Why not make your Vamp(s) stand out in this crowd of Sensitive in love girly Vampires? It seems weird to be crying about how you can't do your Vampire because everyone else has done theirs.

I read it more as he doesn't want to include a vampire in his next novel so it won't be lumped up with the current Twilight mania. After all he said "my next big novel was going to have a vampire." He never said it was going to be about a vampire.

I agree with his reasoning as well. He can always come back to the character/idea another time. And he's right, if he released a book with a vampire in it now, it wouldn't be as effective, because vampires have certain connotations attached to them at the moment.
Now if only filmmakers would think to pass on zombie movies.
And I'm very, very glad that the news isn't what I thought it was: That Neil Gaiman would be writing one of the remaining Twilight movies.

I will admit that the thread title scared me into thinking that he'd once again postponed that Death: The High Cost Of Living movie he keeps promising to do in favor of working on the next Twilight movie.

I don't think he should be worried as much about Twilight as other recent good vampire flicks, like Let the Right One In or Thirst - those have definitely upped the bar in the genre.

Gaiman's problem is more marketing -- people might enjoy his take on vampires if they read it, but they won't read it because of Twilight.

Extremely wealthy former housewives?
While Meyer's romance novels may not appeal to most of those at DVD Talk—especially self-styled connoisseurs of vampires—they have millions of fans.
Kudos to Gaiman for realizing that popular culture has been over-saturated with vampires in recent years and it is time to give it a rest.

Isn't it better to put out a vampire novel while Twilight is popular since so more people are currently into vampire related books? Once Twilight fades down, you have to assume that some readers will loose interest in vampires. Just because someone likes Twilight doesn't mean they aren't open to other vampire related books & a few more non-Twilight vamp books will sell. When I read Steven King's The stand, for a short while I was looking for other 'end of society' type books.

While this is definitely Marvel jumping on a trend, Mark Millar actually pitched that story idea to them seven years ago. It just took some time and some massively popular vampire movies for them to consider it.
