The Kids Are All Right

Scott and Phillips from At the Movies practically fell all over themselves describing how much they liked this film.

<object width="640" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/bdDSqgZ87fM&hl=en_US&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/bdDSqgZ87fM&hl=en_US&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="640" height="385"></embed></object>

Phillips compared it to You Can Count On Me (which also coincidentally features Ruffalo), and for me that is a strong recommendation indeed.

Can't wait to see this. Same director as "High Art" and "Laurel Canyon". I really like her work.

I have been a Netflix member (with a 1 year hiatus in the middle) since late 1999. I swear to God, it seems like High Art has been in my queue since day 1. I know it actually hasn't been out on DVD that long, but it seems like it. Every time it starts to get pushed up near the top of my queue, I push it down in favor of other titles. I just checked and it is still there, sitting in position #22.

Re: The Kids Are All Right

The film is getting RAVE reviews. Except for a certain few. Including the asshat.

Yes he is on there. Armond (the asshat) is one of the few who gave it a thumbs down.

Re: The Kids Are All Right

Anthony Lane of the New Yorker didn't seem to like this much but then I don't think he liked Cholodenko's earlier movies either. He seems a bit square.

Anyway, I absolutely love High Art (what a riveting performance from Ally Sheedy) and thought Laurel Canyon was decent, with a very unique, bohemian feel which is exactly how I imagine Laurel Canyon at the time of Joni Mitchell/CSNY/etc., so I'm excited about this new movie.

I really really enjoyed this movie, I thought the cast was great, the story interesting and engaging. I had forgotten that Cholodenko had also done 'Laurel Canyon' which I enjoyed immensily.

Re: The Kids Are All Right

Doing amazing business in limited release, already at $1.8m in 2 weekends... off 7 screens last weekend ($70,282 per screen average) and only 38 this past weekend ($28,009 per screen average). Kind of surprised they didn't just formally roll it out on both coasts, great cast and only a $4m budget.

Re: The Kids Are All Right

I really enjoyed this movie and everyone was great in it. It was a little intense from time to time. Like the dinner table scene at the end when Bening came back from the bathroom. But I have to say, I didn't think Nic and Jules should have been together. One minutes they're calling each other "babe" and the next minute at each other's throats. It just didn't feel like these two were compatible anymore at this point in their lives. And because of that.....

Spoiler:
I was hoping Moore and Ruffalo would have stayed together.

The movie was good but it was not great and I don't know why Ruffalo was made out to be

Re: The Kids Are All Right

I thought it was very good but not as great as the hype made it out to be. Ruffalo stole the show IMO and it lost a few marks in my book for falling into typical 'indie' film tropes, but certainly worth seeing anyhow.

I leaned over to my wife during the movie and said, "this is the inherent flaw in a romantic relationship with two women in it." Although, there really were only shades of that very early in the film, at least for me. Very little of the story had anything to do with their sexuality after about the first 20 minutes. The filmmakers could have replaced Bening's character with a man and changed little of the script.

Which is why I find...
