I usually use my Season Pass at Alamo Drafthouse but I'll initially see this at an IMAX. The sound of the first movie was amazing.

re: Top Gun: Maverick (2022, D: Kosinski) -- S: Tom Cruise

I have never seen Top Gun from start to finish, but what I have seen from TV it's entertaining enough. But did anyone else feel that it seemed out of place that they never mention who they're fighting against. Just "migs" but they never mention that they're "soviets," "russians," etc. I'm assuming it had to be the Soviets, but considering it's explicitly vague it almost makes it feel like it takes place in some alternate reality. Or maybe that they're just test fighting faceless phantoms? That shit was really weird, especially considering you had movies like Red Dawn that came out just two years prior that had no problem naming who the enemy was. No Way Out had no problem with it. The bad guys in Top Gun? Migs.

It was intentionally vague. The emblem on the Migs wasn't Soviet either; I think the closest to what they used in the film is China. Also why you never hear their pilots speak.

Did it take you out of the movie a bit though?
Was this at the time that the USSR was softening up a bit? Maybe the director didn't want it to be seen as too dated in the long run? When I first saw it I thought the mig battles were some kind of training exercise with some sort of elite no-talking American pilots to simulate battle scenarios . Or there was some sort of friendly competition going on with...I don't know.
That's the one thing that kind of kills it for me. I can overlook some of the 80s cheese, but that part just really sticks out.

Not as a kid. I remember assuming it was Russians every time I saw it without questioning it (being the 80's and all). If I saw the movie for the first time today I'd probably be more curious.

Paramount/Skydance’s long-awaited sequel Top Gun: Maverick will fly on Wednesday, June 24 instead of Friday, June 26. That’s standard for Paramount to take a big summer event tentpole out on a Wednesday, ala their Transformers movies and even the Tom Cruise Steven Spielberg directed 2005 hit War of the Worlds.

Cool, I'll be planning on seeing it that weekend. Also I've seen on many different websites a 4k release of Top Gun will be out in June this year too. I hope it includes a remastered bluray as well.

Gives me that much longer to finally see the original Top Gun first.

You would think that 34 years would be enough time.

This going to feel weird watching during the Holidays.

Now they have to re-do their trailers and marketing with This Christmas....

This felt like a summer movie. Man, now I feel like re-watching the 1st movie again.

This needed to be released 4th of July weekend if theaters would be open by then. I always look at Top Gun to exemplify American Exceptionalism and that goes hand and hand with the 4th of July.

I hadn't seen the original probably since it was released on VHS in the late 1980s. I watched it the other day, and it does not stand up well at all, IMO. I'm still excited about the sequel, though.

This report, which originally came out from the Wall Street Journal, came out a few days ago. Netflix and Apple TV plus inquired to Paramount about selling Top Gun Maverick. Paramount passed. They want this to be a theatrical release.

If the budget is truly in the 150m range, then yes I'd stick with the theatrical release.. in some ways if this delivers a truly must see IMAX experience, it could really be one of the films to jumpstart the back to theaters experience - if they market it as such. So I agree, go all in on a theatrical release.

re: Top Gun: Maverick (2022, D: Kosinski) -- S: Tom Cruise

I wonder if movie theaters survive moving forward if we will end up seeing movies released in this time frame coming back into theaters more often, somewhat 'retro' titles for a few days mid-week to let us see things that were missed during theatrical runs or had limited release due to COVID. It's a safe bet there will be limited releases moving forward due to COVID shut down so it would make sense to see stuff cycle through from time to time as the release schedule has space for older titles...

Good to know because if this comes out in July I'm seeing it on one of the large format screens. It wouldn't be the same if it got released to streaming.

Things won't get back to semi-"normal" until sometime late Fall to Winter 2021 - and that's being optimistic that most people take the vaccine. I'm plenty fine with a 4K streaming release. Or wait until next year.
