Winter's Bone (Granik, 2010)
IMDB | Trailer | 11 June 2010
An unflinching Ozark Mountain girl hacks through dangerous social terrain as she hunts down her drug-dealing father while trying to keep her family intact.
<hr>
Anyone have any interest in seeing this? Caught it this weekend and absolutely loved it. The story is set so deep into surreal despair it almost feels like a post-apocalyptic film. And I don't mean it's fabricated, theatrical despair like Precious; this feels more authentic and lived-in. A number of people in the theater found it hard to believe that whites live like this in America. Gotta love Upper West Side audiences.

Looks interesting. But from the trailer, the plot looks a little weak to sustain a full 100 minute feature. Her looking for her dad for 100 minutes could get a bit boring...

There's a little bit more to it than that, as there's also the question of why he has disappeared. It's about 60% plot / 40% character study. It's not a thriller by any means, but it's not one of those contemplative indie movies where there's no dialog for 5 minutes.

Ebert gave it a 4 star review maybe a a month ago, that cemented me wanting to see it.
93% on RT with like 80 reviews in.
To be honest I'm jealous you've already seen it Bus.

I watched this the other week and I thought it was pretty good but not amazing, I guess it didn't wow me. It was still really entertaining and a good character study. For some reason it reminded me of No country for old men.

Re: Winter's Bone (Granik, 2010)
Caught this at my local film festival. It's raw, unflinching, and utterly compelling from start to finish for a film I had heard going in was a 'slow burn'. John Hawkes (Sol Starr from Deadwood) is the standout in a very good ensemble. Granik's direction is assured and her depictions seem more or less authentic (from somebody who has never visited the Missouri backwoods). The film elicits deep sympathy while never being sentimental, yet I felt like its emotional temperature was similar to Kelly Reinhardt's Wendy and Lucy from 2008 - almost too cold and desolate to involve yourself in properly. A very well made film that you admire more than like or love.

This film will definitely be up for some awards at the end of the season.
Good news, it comes out on DVD in late October.

Hawkes was absolutely fantastic and does deserve a nomination and a win, but I doubt it will happen.
It's movies like this that renew my faith in American film. I couldn't have enjoyed it more.

Seen it when it first opened months ago. Fantastic film. Still my favorite this year so far.
Terrific acting, directing, writing. All around great film.

Re: Winter's Bone (Granik, 2010)
I saw this last night. Enjoyed it a lot.
I was impressed by Jennifer Lawrence so I sought out another movie of hers, The Poker House. I'd never heard of it and I can guess why. It's a very strange film. Supposedly based on Lori Petty's real childhood. Left me with a bad taste in my mouth.

Just saw it and this movie blew me away. I read so many great things about it, but wasn't expecting it to be as good as it was. Both the lead actress and the actor who played her uncle should get Oscars nominations (Best Actress and Supporting Actor). And if they don't, then the Academy turned a blind it. They were both amazing. As wass the film.

Granik deserves an Oscar nomination for Best Director, possibly a win.
Looking at the winner last year, I think they should have waited a year to give the Best Director award to a woman. I thought Bigelow did a fair job, but the film was majorly flawed.
Granik's direction is sharper, more honest and less hokey than Bigelow's was for 'The Hurt Locker'.

Re: Winter's Bone (Granik, 2010)
I thought Bigelow's direction was incredibly sharp (and very much not "hokey"), and a major aspect of what made that film so great. What flaws the (excellent) film did have were in the script, not the direction.
With that said, I did think this was a pretty wonderful film. I loved the "mood" it created, and found the whole experience kind of frightening and very memorable. The director and Jennifer Lawrence both deserve a nomination, but I kind of doubt it will happen.

People can rent the movie now.
I still think this thing will get a couple of nominations. I'm looking at the stuff that will be released late this year and this is one of the most underwhelming seasons for film I've anticipated in a while.

It should (and better) get Oscar attention. For Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor and Screenplay. Hopefully (fingers crossed) Best Picture. Because it deserves all of the above. Thumbs way way way UP!

Watched this last night as well. Amazing movie. Didn't feel like your typical "little indie that could"
Also, for any interested Jennifer Lawrence is the new Mystique in the new X-Men prequel
