Your most favorite time setting for movies

Which of the types of movies do you like more, those set in the past, contemporary (present) or future? There are many good ones from each type but i'll go with the past setting due to all the ancient sword and sandals, westerns and war flicks. Although i also really like modern set movies but mostly those from the 60s/70s/80s and future is good too since scifi is one of the best genres.

I don't really have a preference. Which ever one works better for the story is fine by me.

past- they seem more authentic
so many future set movies just come across as over done

Re: Your most favorite time setting for movies

The western is my favorite genre. It's a source of great anguish for me that they pretty much stopped making them after I graduated college, except for the occasional DANCES WITH WOLVES, UNFORGIVEN and TOMBSTONE.

I also like movies set in the glory days of Shaolin Temple, the Hong Kong equivalent of the western.

And feudal Japan, the Japanese equivalent of the western.

I prefer that movies take place between the hours of 8 and 11 pm.

Re: Your most favorite time setting for movies

I voted for the past because my favorite genre is the old west and hammer horror.
that doesn't mean that I don't watch from the other times of course,
they are just my favorite.

Amen. I feel your pain. I miss the old westerns that should be made now too.
I also like the Asian, Ming Dynasty, Red cliff, warlords genre.

Feudal Japan, nice choice.

I definitely prefer movies that take place in the past. Watching Road to Perdition now, great period piece. I voted past. The only sci-fi space "universe" I ever really enjoyed was the Star Wars universe. As for modern day future, I really enjoyed Children of Men.

I believe Avatar took place on a Thursday. It very well could have been a Friday though...

I know for sure that Terminator was on a Thursday. Positive on that one.

Re: Your most favorite time setting for movies

I'm partial to the past. Some of this is just the same part of my brain that felt the need to get a degree in history, but part of it is that I find it increasingly convoluted for stories set today to properly build suspense by explaining away why all the obvious solutions present day technology offers to various obstacles can't be employed. The dead cell phone battery, or being out of range, is as big a cliche as the car not starting. Go back far enough, and there are no phones or cars to have to explain, and the suspense in those environments feels more threatening (when done properly, of course; there's always room for things to be botched).

Yeah, I don't give a fuck when and where it is as long as it's a good story that's done well.

Don't think it matters to me either, although I seem to have slightly more favorites set in the past.

Re: Your most favorite time setting for movies

I like movies that are set in the future but are now old enough that they actually take place in the past.

Re: Your most favorite time setting for movies

It's really whenever best serves the story, but honestly, I prefer movies set before times when everyone had PDAs, cellphones, youtube and all sorts of other networking tools.

I voted past as well. I especially like period pieces from the 20th century.

And remember, the past includes Star Wars and LOTR.

This sums it up for me as well. However, I did vote for future simply because it opens up more possibilities.

Re: Your most favorite time setting for movies

Europe, 16th-18th centuries, setting of many period movies, usually feature some stunning costumes and art direction (Elizabeth, Dangerous Liaisons, etc.)

Ok you know what? I kinda agree w/ you. It's either no cellphones or practical modern cellphones. The 80s and early 90s has not aged well to me.

Re: Your most favorite time setting for movies

Of course the time period a movie is set in is not usually that important to me (or it's incidental to the setting). My only concern with period pieces is that a lot of the film's attention and resources are spent on making things look historically accurate (set design, costuming), and little is left to make the movie good.
