Re: DVDTalk Character Draft Final (cardsfan111 vs cleaver)

Dang, I missed the final four votes completely. :( Oops.

But here's my final say:

cardsfan111
1. Dr. Henry "Indiana" Jones, Jr. + (great character)
2. Superman +
3. Ellis Boyd "Red" Redding +
4. Anton Chigurh + (fantastic villain)
5. Annie Wilkes +
6. Willy Wonka + (the Depp portrayal almost killed this one)
7. Clark W. Griswold + (one of the few funny roles Chase has ever done)
8. Ferris Bueller +
9. Lt. Frank Drebin +
10. George Bailey +
Total: : 10 (perfect score!)

cleaver
1. Vito Corleone + (insprirational!)
2. The Joker + (no "The")
3. Norman Bates + (still a great character despite the fapping in the remake)
4. Han Solo + (classic Harrison Ford)
5. Robin Hood + (lots of crappy performances of this character, but Errol Flynn is still a classic)
6. Clementine Kruczynski - (generic "quirky" hipster girl, complete with colored hair)
7. Norma Desmond + (it was the draft games that got small!)
8. Holly Golightly - (hard to look past the horrific racism in this film to see the characters)
9. Navin R. Johnson + (least convincing poor black child ever)
10. Kermit the Frog - (Kermit is pretty boring, I would go with almost any other muppet)
Total Pluses: 7

Winner: cardsfan111

cardsfan111
1. Dr. Henry "Indiana" Jones, Jr. (Harrison Ford, Indiana Jones franchise, 1981-2008): One of the most iconic characters in cinema. Even with the less than stellar fourth outing, this is a great choice. +
2. Superman (various actors, Superman franchise, 1951-2006): As a character, he's kind of inherently boring, especially when compared to Batman and Spider-Man, the other two pegs on the comic book trifecta. And aside from Christopher Reeves first two Superman movies, the big screen has done more harm than good to the character. However, I love Superman 1 and 2 so much I'll give this a +.
3. Ellis Boyd "Red" Redding (Morgan Freeman, The Shawshank Redemption, 1994): A great movie, but isn't this really just one of many wise old black men that Morgan Freeman has played? (I don't dislike the character, I just wonder if he's a good pick for a game like this). -
4. Anton Chigurh (Javier Bardem, No Country For Old Men, 2007): Great iconic villain. +
5. Annie Wilkes (Kathy Bates, Misery, 1990): A less iconic villain. -
6. Willy Wonka (Gene Wilder and Johnny Depp, Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory/Charlie & The Chocolate Factory, 1971-2005): I liked both iterations of this character. +
7. Clark W. Griswold (Chevy Chase, Vacation Franchise, 1983-1997): The quintessential Chevy Chase character. +
8. Ferris Bueller (Matthew Broderick, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, 1986): A fun slacker character, but perhaps bit of a lightweight in this competition. Still, a +.
9. Lt. Frank Drebin (Leslie Nielsen, Naked Gun Franchise, 1988-1994): One of the funniest characters in film. +
10. George Bailey (Jimmy Stewart, It's A Wonderful Life, 1946): Haven't seen it, neither a plus nor a minus.

Pluses: 7.
Minuses: 2.

cleaver
1. Vito Corleone (Marlon Brando & Robert De Niro, The Godfather I & II, 1972 & 1974): The one everyone quotes, but not as interesting as Michael. Still a good character overall. +
2. The Joker (Heath Ledger, Jack Nicholson, Mark Hamill, Cesar Romero, Batman franchise, 1966-2008): I love almost every incarnation of this character. +
3. Norman Bates (Anthony Perkins & Vince Vaughn, Psycho franchise, 1960-1998): A classic character, haven't seen any of the sequels. +
4. Han Solo (Harrison Ford, Star Wars trilogy, 1977-1983): "I know." +
5. Robin Hood (various actors, various adaptations, 1912-2010): I only like two Robin Hood movies (The Adventures of Robin Hood and Robin Hood: Men In Tights), and all the rest are so bad that they've made me enjoy this character less. -
6. Clementine Kruczynski (Kate Winslet, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, 2004): An interesting choice, especially since she pretty much only exists as Joel's character sees her. Still, a great movie, sp +.
7. Norma Desmond (Gloria Swanson, Sunset Blvd., 1950): Brilliant character. +
8. Holly Golightly (Audrey Hepburn, Breakfast at Tiffany's, 1961): Haven't seen it, no pluses or minuses.
9. Navin R. Johnson (Steve Martin, The Jerk, 1979): I was going to take this choice for myself, so obvious +.
10. Kermit the Frog (Jim Henson & Steve Whitmire, Muppet Franchise, 1977-2007): It's not easy being green. +

Pluses: 8
Minuses: 1

Winner: cleaver

I feel like I owe cleaver the vote since he took the task of hosting the rest of the draft, and he has a great list, but cardsfan111 takes it by a hair. Indy is an iconic character, one of my personal favorites, Chigurh is an incredible villain, and Red is from my favorite movie of all time.

WTF?!

It boggles my mind to think that a guy like Suprmallet has not seen It's A Wonderful Life. (And that had he seen it, his scores would have been tied).

As for me, it's cardsfan111 by quite a margin.

It's one of those classics I've never gotten around to seeing. I wasn't raised Christian, so Christmas movies never got played in my house.

Two thing I noted: One, we got a lot more participation when we had a bunch of threads, along with all the publicity created in the feedback forum. ;) Secondly, perhaps I shouldn't have been so confident going into the final...what am I going to do with the box of cardsfan111 championship t-shirts I've had printed up?

Ummm, Christmas plays a convenient role in the film's finale, but I wouldn't exactly refer to this as a Christmas movie. There's a whole lot of other stuff that goes on, esp. the decidedly un-Christmas-y "Potterville" segment.

And how could you not want to see the origins of "Bert and Ernie"?

Re: DVDTalk Character Draft Final (cardsfan111 vs cleaver)

I've seen a hell of a lot of Woody Allen movies, yet I wasn't raised Jewish. (Not to mention The Jazz Singer, Biloxi Blues, Fiddler on the Roof, etc., etc.)

Spoiler:
I'm just giving you crap, Suprmallet. But you really do need to see it. It's one of the 25 greatest American films ever made, IMO, and I know you are a true film fan.

Groucho 06-08-10 10:55 AM

Re: DVDTalk Character Draft Final (cardsfan111 vs cleaver)

It's a Wonderful Life was actually released in January, and has only become associated as a "Christmas movie" in recent years on television. But if the long runtime and b&w turn you off, you could also check out the recent remake, Shrek Forever After.

1. Dr. Henry "Indiana" Jones, Jr. - Loved as a kid, not so much anymore
2. Superman - Never transcended the comics for me.

4. Anton Chigurh - Good, memorable character
5. Annie Wilkes - no.
6. Willy Wonka - Yes
7. Clark W. Griswold - classic, yet so-so.
8. Ferris Bueller not as classic, and even more so-so
9. Lt. Frank Drebin really? - Drebin?
10. George Bailey - Schmaltz, lovely schmaltz, but still schmaltz.

cleaver
1. Vito Corleone - ding ding ding!!!
2. The Joker - comic booky, but Heath Ledger made me believe
3. Norman Bates Oh hell yes!
4. Han Solo - Loved as a kid, not so much anymore, (A hair above Indy)
5. Robin Hood - Errol Flynn - yes, and then I must say no.
6. Clementine Kruczynski - Big crush, but in all of cinematic history?
7. Norma Desmond Bravo sir!

I'm thinking 24 hour runoff OT if there are no objections.

And in my household The Godfather is the preferred Christmas movie.
