So, looks like Jake can't really open a movie. Might not be his fault, though, since the marketing for PoP was terrible. Although, from what I've heard so is the film.

Please, for the love of all that is holy, don't make a SatC 3.

Hmmm.... wonder if Robin Hood can cross $100m, or if IM2 will outgross IM1.

What a lousy summer movie season so far. Toy Story 3 and Inception can't arrive fast enough.

What? Not looking forward to Eclipse at the end of June? Heh.

Love the thread title.

I'm curious about today's numbers. I think Sex and the City 2 might continue to drop letting the door open for Shrek / Prince of Persia to scoop up #1 and #2.

Because if the trailer for the 3rd is anywhere near as bad as the trailer for the 2nd, my head might explode in the theater.

Stop knocking women for running off together to see SATC.

It opens up many opportunities for left-at-home husbands:

Of course they're going to make SATC 3, they could make those mochas for nothing and women will flock to them. The only thing that could impede future sequels is the age of the stars, but they still have a few years left.

What a lousy summer movie season so far. Toy Story 3 and Inception can't arrive fast enough.

I think Robin Hood will make it, but barely. Iron Man 2 is interesting. At the same release point as the original, it continues to earn less each day. The lead over the original is down to about $25 million. They may leave it playing long enough to claim it passed the original's US total, but I'm beginning to wonder if that's possible now. The overseas gross did pass the original with a total of $276 million. I'm sure it still has some markets to open in, so IM2 should end up with a worldwide gross of over $600 million. Definitely less than most of us probably guessed, but still a good take.

This looks like another Summer where we'll have a mix of $200 and $300 mil grossing films. I don't think anything will flat out dominate, including Toy Story 3.

It really looks like it'll be similar to 2007. Spiderman 3 won with $336 mil, Shrek 3 had $322 mil, Transformers $319 mil, Pirates 3 $309 mil. Everything else was under $300 mil.

IM2 is a lock at $300 m. Shrek could get there. Same for Toy Story 3 and Twilight 3. If Inception is really well received, it has a shot as well. But other than those, I don't see anything sniffing $250 mil.

For clarification, the numbers Mr. Cinema posted are for the 3-day weekend. :)

Everyone expected SATC 2 to drop. Not everyone expected Prince of Persia to do, what's the word, poorly.

Maybe I'm not reading it right but Sex and the City 2 cost $100M to make?? What in there costs that much? I've only seen the trailer so I don't know what else is in it. Did each of the actresses get some insane amount of $$ to be in it?

Agree, as much as I liked IM2 I never thought it would make 400 million as many thought and it is dropping faster than anticipated. I had the same thoughts about the summer movies some time back as well that there will probably be several underperfomers and maybe not a true huge blockbuster this summer. I hope Splice becomes a nice little sleeper though.

That's a pretty low drop for Shrek.

Read somewhere that just the clothes budget was 10 million+

Happy that SATC2 wasn't number 1. Neither was PoP but that's not shocking to me.

Guess they are just getting the $$ while they can. Outside of SJP, are any of the SATC successful actresses? I'd even question Sara Jessica Parker's star power about headlining a movie.

$10M for clothes! Yikes. If the producers were smart, they'd probably be able to get most of the clothes free or little cost. I'm sure there are TONS of fashion designers who would love to get their outfits in a movie enough to let the movie feature them for free. The publicity of having a design in a movie is probably well worth any payment they might get otherwise.

Actually, Cynthia Nixon is probably the most successful actress (tho SJP makes a hell of a lot more money, I'm sure). She has appeared on the NY stage in about a dozen Broadway productions, including Tom Stoppard's The Real Thing, Angels In America, revivals of such classics as The Women and Philadelphia Story, and has won the Tony award for Best Actress in a Play.

Not too shabby a stage career .....
