I liked "Big Fish" too. It was a little too sentimental but there was a sincere message in it.

I went to a Tim Burton exhibition at MOMA early this year and there they had poems and stories along with their respective drawings he had done when he was young.
And they were pretty cool. They were simple but clever and they had this playfulness to them that made the dark subjects in them seem normal. It reminded me of his short "Vincent" which I thought was perfect.

So I think he is creative but has a problem extending his ideas into full length feature films. Even on "Nightmare Before Christmas" (which he wrote the original story) became a success only because of Henry Selick knew exactly how to film it.

Good luck convincing the average person that it wasn't Burton that directed it.

Ed Wood, Edward Scissorhands, Beetlejuice, and Sleepy Hollow are his only films I will watch from time to time. I've avoided everything since Charlie like the plague.

He's definitely not a top tier director anymore. Films like Planet of the Apes automatically exclude him from such a notion.
