I dunno if Do The Right Thing is something a summer season would be remembered for.

Re: Best summer movie seasons from the 80's decade to now

1989-I was seven years old that summer, and I still remember how big Batman was that year. It's still one of my favorite summer blockbusters of all time.

1996- I remember getting to see The Rock with my dad, my first R rated movie in the theatres, and I still watch Twister this time of year.

No real favorites from the 2000's that stand out for me like those two years.

Re: Best summer movie seasons from the 80's decade to now

1982 completely owns 1989. Conan The Barbarian, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Poltergeist, Blade Runner, Rocky III, Firefox, The Road Warrior, The Thing, Tron, Fast Times At Ridgemont High

Oh and the 2007 movies you listed were all garbage (with the exception of Harry Potter V). 2008, with Iron Man, The Dark Knight, Wall-E, Hellboy 2, Tropic Thunder, and even The Incredible Hulk and Speed Racer was much superior to 2007.

1991- T2: Judgment Day back when it was ok to send your kid to an R rated action and it still be ok.

1993- Jurassic Park...my parents and I were astonished to see what looked like real Dinosaurs on screen...also...love the theme to JP.

2008- Iron Man, Hellboy II: The Golden Army, The Dark Knight, The Incredible Hulk , Tropic Thunder, and Wall-E(this is probably my fav year for summer films)

2008 was one of my favorite movie summers ever: Iron Man, Incredible Hulk, Forbidden Kingdom, Narnia: Prince Caspian, Hellboy II, Speed Racer, The Dark Knight, Indiana Jones/Crystal Skull.

Re: Best summer movie seasons from the 80's decade to now

1989- Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Ghostbusters 2, and of course, Batman. While Batman didn't really hold up well, it definitely was what re-kick started the whole "I gotta see this movie right now!" craze. Also, for a kid who was 12 going on 13, it was the best movie ever made in my eyes.

1991- T2 Judgment Day-FX at the next big level, and the joy of seeing a rated R movie underage.

1996- Mission Impossible, ID4, Eraser, Twister, and A Time to Kill. This is significant in that it was the my first summer home from college and I felt on top of the world with life. I was working a great summer job at a small town law office and would unwind with a new blockbuster every Friday evening at my theater. I guess it was the fact that I knew my whole life was in front of me, and A Time to Kill proved to be a good date movie when I got back to school in the fall.

1999- it had the first Star Wars movie in over 16 years, nuff said. FWIW, I couldn't get enough of it at the time, it just did not age well....

2005- The Star Wars movie I always wanted to see since the days of Jedi

2008- best time to be a comic book movie fan, and I got to see Indiana Jones again. Felt like one of my childhood summers again.

Completely agree that 1982 was the best Summer Movie season... well, ever!

And you even forgot to add E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial to that list!

(Plus I'd add both The Beastmaster and The Sword and the Sorcerer to the list as well)

Whoa 82 is spectacular even though Road Warrior is technically an 81 release. The early 80s were solid.

Don't forget Tron and John Carpenter's The Thing, both appreciated more now than then.

Oh no, we appreciated BOTH a lot back then. They got a ton of play on cable in 83/84.

I was 11 in the Summer of 82, and went to a day camp that was next to a movie theater. Camp was from like 8:30 to 1, but my Mom couldn't pick me up until 4 usually, so every day I got some Wendy's and went to the movies. I saw almost every movie that came out that summer, many, many MANY times. I can't tell you how many times I sat through Star Trek, Rocky III, Firefox, Tron, and (ick) Annie, Grease 2, and THE MOST ENJOYABLY AWFUL MOVIE OF ALL TIME!!!!1!!1!!:

Spoiler:

My parents were cool with the rated R movies so stuff like Conan, The Thing, and Fast Times were good memories as well.

And although I only saw it in theaters once at the end of the summer, THE BEASTMASTER was just legendary for a fantasy/scifi/comic book/D&D geek like me.

I meant the summer during which they were released.

Gotcha. Blade Runner was a financial disappointment too, but is now highly regarded as one of the greatest science fiction films ever made. Heck, it's one of the greatest movies ever made period, regardless of genre.

1986: Aliens. The Fly. Big Trouble in Little China

1989: Batman. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Lethal Weapon 2.

1991: Terminator 2. The Rocketeer. Robin Hood (I had fun).

1994: The Lion King. True Lies. Natural Born Killers. Speed. The Crow

1999: The Matrix (still playing). Star Wars I. Blair Witch. Eyes Wide Shut.

2003: Matrix Reloaded. Pirates of the Caribbean. Finding Nemo.

2008: Iron Man. Dark Knight. Tropic Thunder. Wall-E.

Purely subjective, of course.

I'll go with 1989 for BATMAN/LAST CRUSADE/DO THE RIGHT THING, and the two best films that summer that no one's mentioned so far: the James Bond film, LICENCE TO KILL and Brian De Palma's Vietnam War drama, CASUALTIES OF WAR.

Re: Best summer movie seasons from the 80's decade to now

1982 was fantastic, but let's give a shout out to 1984 as well, which brought us:

Ghostbusters
Gremlins
Star Trek III
Indiana Jones & The Temple of Doom
The Karate Kid
The Natural
Red Dawn
The Last Starfighter

For the 90s, I'd go with 1993, which brought us:

Jurassic Park
The Fugitive
In The Line of Fire
The Firm
Dave

I agree with 2008 for the 2000s - in fact, it might be the only summer that WASN'T as disappointment in the whole decade.

Re: Best summer movie seasons from the 80's decade to now

My gut instinct is to say 1989, but the truth is that the only blockbuster I saw that year during its theatrical release was Batman. I've seen others, but not till their home video releases. 1996 was a favorite year of mine, because we finally got a theater in my home town in the latter part of '95 and it was the first summer I got to actually make it out to see movies with regularity. It's a shame Star Trek: First Contact didn't come out until 22 November, 'cause that would have cemented it as a perfect summer for me. Still, here's what I did see in the theater that summer:

5/10 Twister
5/12 Celtic Pride
5/24 Spy Hard and Mission: Impossible
5/31 Dragonheart
6/10 The Rock
6/21 Eraser
6/28 The Nutty Professor
7/02 Independence Day
7/26 Kingpin
8/18 Escape from L.A.
8/23 The Island of Dr. Moreau

Re: Best summer movie seasons from the 80's decade to now

I would say 1999 not because it had the best movies but it was the summer before I started working full time and had a lot of time on my hands. I can recall off the top of my head seeing the following in theatres that summer: Phantom Menace, Matrix, Sixth Sense, Austin Powers, Big Daddy, South Park, Blair Witch Project, The Mummy, American Pie, Entrapment, Bowfinger, Thomas Crown Affair and Wild Wild West.

Yeah, that was another great Summer season.

The Road Warrior (aka Mad Max 2) was released in other parts of the world in '81, but it was a Spring/Summer '82 release in the U.S.

(But thanks to the early buzz about it from overseas, the word was out that it was a great movie before it even opened here.)
