Summer Movies - 2011

There are a few gems out this Summer movie season, maybe 5-6 that are must-see opening week for me, some others I won't mind waiting awhile for. Next Summer, however, has what looks to be a great line-up with something good being released nearly every week...

-May-

6th - Thor
13th - Untitles Kristen Wiig/Jud Apatow comedy
20th - Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides
26th - The Hangover 2

-June-

3rd - Kung Fu panda: The kaboom of Doom

X-Men:First Class

10th - Fast Five

Something Borrowed (Kate Hudson/Ginnifer Goodwin. Based on Emily Giffin's 2005 novel. Manhatten attorney (Goodwin) becomes involved with best friend's (Hudson) fiance.

17th - Green Lantern

24th - Cars 2

Rise of the Apes (tentative title)

-July-

1st - Transformers 3

8th - Zookeeper (Kevin James' character chats with the animals at the zoo where he works)

15th - Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (part two in 3-D)

22nd - The First Avenger: Captain America

29th - Cowboys & Aliens

-August-

3rd - The Change-Up (a responsible family man (Jason Bateman) switches bodies with his best friend, a lazy man-child (Ryan Reynold)

The Smurfs (in 3-D)

10th - 30 Minutes or Less (comedy. Junior high history teacher and pizza-delivery man are forced to rob a bank when one of them is strapped to a bomb vest)

War Horse (Steven Spielberg directs tale of a horse that is sold to the French army during World war I and the efforts of the farm boy who once owned him to locate him)

19th - Skank Robbers (Jamie Foxx and Martin Lawrence play female bank robbers)

Spy Kids 4:All The Time in the World (in 3-D)

-- Eh...so August aint lookin so pretty save for War Horse but...

Note: as always, movie and dates are subject to change.

Other than Cars 2 (and I know many will disagree with that one, but it's Pixar!) I don't see a damn thing on your list that looks interesting in the least.

What a God-awful lineup.

If there's no EXPENDABLES II or MACHETE II or KICK-ASS II, then I ain't goin' to the movies in the summer of '11.

Only Thor, Green Lantern, X-Men: First Class, and Captain America catch my eye. I sense a pattern here ...

Re: Summer Movies - 2011

Wow, for every one I can't wait to see, there are two shitfests on that list. Skank Robbers!? Holy shit. And there is no way in hell Michael Bay gets another dime of my money, at least on the Transformers franchise.

Surprised there isn't any love for Cowboys V Aliens. Sounds like an interesting idea.

Some titles I'll likely see in there, but the one I'm most excited for is now Super 8.

30 Min or Less. It's strange that they would make a comedy with that concept considering something very similar happened in real life. And the man died. Go Hollywood!

Looks more promising than this Summer. Super 8 is probably tops on my list now. I do wish MI4 had stayed in its May slot.

Re: Summer Movies - 2011

From what I've been able to read, the new Pirates of the Caribbean "is loosely based on the 1988 pirate novel On Stranger Tides, by Tim Powers", and may have very little similarity to the previous 3. Apparently, Captain Jack's well established character will be different (The novel's protagonist is a pirate named Jack, but his character is significantly different from Jack Sparrow), the budget will be considerably less, the story will be shorter, the only 2 actors from the original trilogy will be Johnny Depp and Geoffrey Rush, and Rush is only rumored (as of Jan, 2010):

imdb.com/title/tt1298650/trivia (sorry, can't link yet)

Sounds to me like Disney is just trying to capatalize on the "Pirates of the Caribbean" title for money's sake.

Otherwise, I don't see anything worthwhile in the lineup, curious as to how the comicbook movies will turn out though. People want to go see movies, some don't care what movies they see so it will be a rich time for them, but for the rest of us, I hope those aren't they only movies they're working on because this lineup is lame. -kd5-

Oh dear lord...

The only ones that interest me in the slightest are:

-Thor
-Untitled Kristen Wiig/Judd Apatow comedy
-The Hangover 2
-Green Lantern
-The First Avenger: Captain America

And maybe The Change-Up and 30 Minutes or Less. It's not a horrible summer line-up by any means, but...dear lord, Skank Robbers?

Johnny Depp is all you need to sell a picture. If he's in it, and it has the word Pirate, it will definitely make the studio some money.

Re: Summer Movies - 2011

I don't really get all these superhero movies in one season. I think two major superhero movies per summer is about what the market will bear (think IRON MAN and DARK KNIGHT two years ago), although I'm sure someone here will point to a summer where three superhero movies were major hits (I can't think of one myself). I, personally, can't take more than one per season.

It would be one thing if I were watching 3 Batman movies in the same calendar year, but each property is different so I don't really understand any complaint about super hero "overkill" that i've seen people mention. To me it's just the same as watching any other combination of action films over the summer.
