Movies you don't understand all of the hate for..

Ok, this is not meant to be a thread about movies that were not that successful or noticed and considered underrated. Rather, this is about movies that got more or less panned universally and upon your viewing, didn't really find that bad. They were not great, but not the steaming pile of crap you were lead to believe.

Van Helsing- until the third act, found it just as entertaining as the first two Mummy movies

13th Warrior- just a pulpy Viking adventure story, nothing more or less

Chronicles of Riddick - I thought it was a lot better than Pitch Black, had great effects, and a massive universe that was populated with some interesting characters/races.

I second this! I really don't understand all the hate for it. True, it had it's weak moments, but overall, I found it just as fun and entertaining as the first.

Any Given Sunday, besides an owner not dating Justin Timberlake what more does anyone want out of a football movie?

The Matrix sequels.

Not nearly as bad as people make them out to be.

Titanic - It made a zillion dollars and won plenty of Oscars, but it's very chic to crap all over it. I think it's terrific. One of my favorites and I watch it fairly often.

Spider-Man 3-- it is a step down from the first two but not an abomination like I often hear -- that would be "Batman and Robin" is the correct answer. The worst flaws in "S3" are the last, very very rushed act, I think, and the shoehorning in Venom rather painfully. I even enjoyed "Dancing Parker," myself.

^ Good one. Problems aside, I like Spider-Man 3 better than the first film.

I agree that they would have been decent sci-fi films if they existed by themselves. But the concepts of the first one were presented in such a perfect way to make the film seem revolutionary and a very tough act to follow. It ended perfectly in my opinion, with no need for sequels.

I view the sequels as as set of outtakes of the first, and enjoy them for the decent action scenes, but ignore the plots and dialogue.

I like it more than I usually admit too. Very well done film overall.

Elektra. Apparently I'm the only person on the planet who likes this movie.

Dreamcatcher - I really liked the angle they took in respect to the aliens taking passive forms to psych the humans. The whole ass-weasel deal didn't bother me but it was just lacking a final polish IMO.

Daredevil - not the best Marvel adaptation, but decent enough for me. Wish they would do a sequel.

1941 - nearly everyone I know hates this movie while I think it's one of the most funny movies ever.

I am going to go with 1941 as well. I held off on watching it for years and years but ended up liking it quite a bit. Then I learned the movie did really well in Europe and it seems I like movies Europeans tend to like, so that may explain it. But it was actually quite good.

It lacked good story, character, and dialogue and tried to make up for it with big explosions. The effects were no better (some even think worse) then the first one, and the continuity errors with the robots were way to common and noticeable. The story was riddled with errors that make the whole premises laughable, not to mention how in every scene Shia talked like he was on drugs. The humor would have only been funny if you were 7, and the use of IMAX cameras were completely wasted with the back and forth (35mm-70mm) cuts and the lack of wide immersive shots. Overall it insults the moviegoers intelligence, and takes a huge shit on American cinema.

^ If anything Tranformers 2 deserves more hate than it gets. Truly dreadful, bloated, loud and embarrassing...a film that embodies everything that's wrong with the 'summer blockbuster' phenomena.

Indeed. There is a decent film in there somewhere. If nothing else... technically brilliant.

Aside from the already-dated soundtrack, I'm with you on this. And I still haven't even seen the more-applauded Director's Cut yet.
