Gene Hackman Appreciation Thread (1930-2025)

I mean, his last movie was Welcome to Mooseport (2004). We can't allow that to be his final film. Anyone know anything? I hear his voice in Lowe's commercials still, but that's about it.

He's 80, retired from acting, and writing novels.

Re: Is Gene Hackman okay?

Per Wikipedia:

Present
Together with undersea archaeologist Daniel Lenihan, Hackman has written three novels: Wake of the Perdido Star (1999), Justice for None (2004), and Escape from Andersonville (2008).
On July 7, 2004, Hackman gave a rare interview to Larry King, in which Hackman announced that he had no future film projects lined up, and believes his acting career is over. In 2008, while promoting his third novel, Hackman confirmed that he had retired from acting.[7] His final film to date was Welcome to Mooseport (2004), a comedy with Ray Romano in which Hackman portrayed a former President of the United States.

Re: Is Gene Hackman okay?

So Sean Connery goes out with "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" and Hackman bows out with "Welcome to Mooseport"? Now that's sad. Although, I think Hackman is 10x the actor Connery was.

Gene Hackman picked some NFL games on the Le Batard Show last year, sounded fully cognizant.

Heard him promoting his recent novel on the radio when it came out. He sounded okay at the time.

Just recently saw a magazine ad for some brand of watch with Connery. He hasn't aged a day since we last saw him.

Regardless of the film's merits, I kinda wish he'd gone out with Indy 4.

Re: Is Gene Hackman okay?

Doesn't Hackman do the voice over work for Lowe's commercials? Sure sounds like him. That still gives him some steady income.

He does. Or did, anyway, I haven't seen one in some time so who knows if he's still doing it.

Re: Is Gene Hackman okay?

Judging by some of the responses in this thread you'd think people are unhappy that Hackman is okay.

Actually, Sean Connery is voicing the titular character in the forthcoming Sir Billi, Scotland's first animated feature. It's not live action, of course, but it's something on his resume. Orson Wells's final feature was voicing Unicron in The Transformers: The Movie. No causal relationship, of course; just a favorite bit of trivia I like to bring up every now and again.

Yeah, I was going to mention Connery's voice work. He also played Bond one final time, in voice, for the "From Russia With Love" game.

Re: Is Gene Hackman okay?

Old men should not voice animated films. It typically ends up being the last feature film they make!

(Welles, Paul Newman, Jim Varney, Roddy McDowall... there's more)
