Interesting, thanks for clarifying.

It makes me feel like a fool for not even considering that.

I think I'm starting to look forward to this. I have faith that Elba and McConaughey wouldn't be involved if the script was a dog. Hopefully the director can pull it off and we get the necessary sequels.

Are there to be sequels? From the images and captions, it looks like they are trying to hit most of the story in a single crack ... there seems to be parts of The Gunslinger, Wastelands, and the last three novels here with what looks like most of Jake's arc, Roland in NYC, and beam breakers being discussed.

If it makes money and remembers the face of its father, there will be sequels.

Going by the article, it sounds like ...

Spoiler:
... they're combining Jake's story from The Gunslinger and The Wastelands. In this version, Jake's a potential Breaker who's having dreams of Roland (caused by previous cycles?) The Man in Black makes a detour to NYC to capture him, and the Gunslinger follows. The pic of Flagg surrounded by acolytes is supposed to be the Dixie Pig, and the article mentions the Dutch Hill mansion will appear as well.

However, the article is explicit that there's no Eddie or Susannah, no father Callahan or the Calla, nor does it sound like Roland will reach the Tower in this book. They're just changing things around and bringing elements into the story earlier.

Hmmm ... I've probably been back and forth (would need to go back and read my own comments to be sure), but I'm not liking this. I'm ok with a "new" adventure not in the books, but I don't like trying to combine books to boil down an extremely thick and densely populated story. I'm still not a believer in making movies out of this series. It needs to be a tv series (HBO, Netflix, maybe even AMC).

I've never read any of The Dark Tower series and am wondering if it's something I need to do before the movie comes out, or if I'm better off waiting for the film and go in with zero expectations. This is only a $60 million dollar movie (and how much of that went to get McConaughey? $15 million perhaps?), so it will be interesting to see if that hurts the final product or not.

Since it's supposedly (correct me. If I'm wrong) only one film, I don't see the point of reading all those books and then ultimately be disappointed by a the gimped story of the movie

The very nature of the Dark Tower series was that it was one of possibly infinite cycles each with only a slight change in the beginning. There's no reason to think other cycles were identical to the books we read, is there? To me it seems that this movie is the next cycle or just the first part of it.

I only read it once and that was a long time ago. I've no doubt I've forgotten or never got much of the nuance.

I need to read this series. It's something I keep hearing about over time but never cared for cuz of something else taking my attention.

Either way. The film has to be taken on its own. So reading it is pointless really. Entertaining and possibly fulfilling for one's self but not needed to click w/ the film. If so, then the film failed.

I was under the impression that each cycle was close to being identical the only difference being the item at the end/beginning.

The point of reading all the books would be satisfaction in itself. Ignore the movie for a bit and take a ride on Blaine through Mid-World for a helluva adventure.

Yes, read the books. Even the crappy book 5/6 are still worth a read.

I suppose that depends on how much already having the item would affect the need for certain events in the cycle.

I should have clarified. I think it's silly to read books first just because some movie that's loosely based (how couldn't it?) on the source material is coming out. I'd like to read this series some day, but I wouldn't dare rush to read them just because this movie is coming out next year.

True. I guess we have no idea how many cycles there have been(or are we to believe the novels were the first journey?) but obviously the items are of little help if Roland is still on this journey.

Is it though? I know he throws that number out a lot. If it is indeed that high, then I'd have to imagine each cycle isn't that different.
