via slash film....
According to Deadline, Lee is in talks to play the female lead role in The Dark Tower. Where this gets confusing is the character’s name: she’s reported to be playing Tirana, a minor character who doesn’t even appear until the seventh volume of King’s Dark Tower book series, on which the film is based. Tirana is definitely not the female lead in the novels. In fact, she’s so obscure that even hardcore fans don’t seem quite sure who she is — I’ve seen some readers swear up and down that no one named Tirana exists in the books.
One possibility is that Lee’s Tirana is a renamed version of a different, more prominent character from the novels, possibly Susan or Susannah. (The latter is the female lead in the book series, but doesn’t appear until the second novel so it’s unclear if she’ll be in this film at all. She’s also black, so Lee would be a really bizarre and controversial casting choice.) It may also be that the trade’s sources just have their details mixed up. For what it’s worth, though, they describe Lee’s character as “sexy and dangerous,” with “fake human skin and cold snake-like eyes.”

Yeah, I've read all 7 seven books and I don't remember a character named Tirana. There isn't really a major white, female character until the 4th book, which is mostly a flashback novel, and that character should be younger. So I have no idea what Abbey Lee is going to be doing in this movie.

Something tells me that they won't have a "Susannah" in this movie as we know her in the books. Having a woman restricted to a wheelchair is seriously going to drag down the pace in many instances.

I am excited this is happening. I'm glad they are taking some chances (I'm digging Idris Elba) ... But I have to say I am very cynical since: a) this is currently just a one-off film; b) it takes place mostly in modern day (unwillingness to spend money on sets); and c) the number three character announced is a trend actress playing a non-existent character.

I would be very skeptical of this movie. Everything so far sounds like a typical Hollywood project where the original work means very, very little to the movie.
I understand holding out hope as a fan but King licenses his work out to anyone handing out the most cash.

I find myself leaning a bit towards the skeptical side myself.
I don't want them to stick too close to the books because honestly I think the series got pretty bad in the later half. At the same time I still was really into the world King created, so I'm interested to see what they do with that potential.
I'm cool with Elba and to a lesser extent McConaughey. Elba doesn't have the physical build of Roland from the book, but I think he can do other aspects of the character justice. Maybe he could lose some weight. I always liked the idea of Roland being kind of lanky, not so much physically powerful, but tough, like a weathered strip of leather. It plays into the aspects of his character's persistence, endurance through strength of will.
Roland being white is relevant in the books, but it's not really vital. I wouldn't be surprised if they wanted to ditch that aspect of the story anyway, not just because of the minefield in handling the race/racism issues but the entire split personality arc would be problematic in translating to the screen.
One movie obviously can't do the whole series justice, but it could work as it's own thing. Hearing it's mostly set in the modern world is not encouraging, neither is the quick turn around and Jan. release date.

I'm skeptical because we've already had a half dozen starts and stops already. No reason to think this will be any different at this point.

They've announced a release date and are gearing up to begin production in a couple months. When a movie reaches that point, the only way it doesn't get made is if Terry Gilliam's the director.

Some pics of Elba on set have surfaced:
More here: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz...ark-Tower.html
So I guess this is movie actually happening. The race to read all 8 books over the next year or so is on.

I'd be very surprised if this turns out to be a faithful adaptation. Even the first book is pretty atypical of what would make for a successful movie.
