I always envisioned the books working better as a series on HBO or Netflix or something personally. I only read the first two books years back though. I liked them but I just don't make enough time for reading and just stopped.

Trailer didn't do much for me. Then again I pretty much checked out when it was announced that Akiva Goldsman was writing the screenplay as he's barely managed to rub together 2 good movies in 25 years. None of the other writers inspire much confidence either.

Thanks, it's been a while. Of course we know the Drawing of the Three won't be in this movie, and we're not sure Eddie or Detta will be in this series. Although if this is successful and they expand the universe for sequels, I'd expect them to be.
Do we know
I love the series(at least the first four books) but it's amusing to me that people are criticizing the movie for not being faithful or ripping off current trends like superhero films and Mad Max. I think the fans have to realize that the Dark Tower series is extremely derivative of 20th century fiction and pop culture. I mean this is a book series that shamelessly used lightsabers and snitches from Star Wars and Harry Potter. It makes sense that the movie would avoid direct copyright infringement while also mimicking current trends in film making. With as difficult as it can be to adapt King's work, I'm keeping an open mind.
It's too early to say. Roland is clearly supposed to be Clint Eastwood's character from the Fistful of Dollars movies, which is much closer to McConaughey's physique. Having said that, Elba looks pretty badass in the trailer and I think McConaughey's performance as the Man in Black will be suitably entertaining.
The second book was significantly split between our world and Roland's.

I don't think it would be difficult to do a fairly faithful adaptation. I do like the concept of this being a "different time around" since the books do lead to a Sisyphusian tale. I think they should have stuck with the first few books faithfully and strayed as the later books work themselves into pop-culture references. That would be more true to the idea that this has happened before and will happen again until Roland "gets it right".

Spoiler:
I'm with you. I'm looking forward to this and will be there opening weekend, but this does not appear to be what I wanted as a fan. This is a story based on characters created by Stephen King. It appears as if everything that made the books special will be cut or turned into a degraded copy of a copy of itself.

According to this site, the runtime of the version currently being screened is... 85 minutes.

Wow, going from the most ambitious Hollywood project ever (movie + tv series + movie + tv series) to a single hour and twenty minute film.
Alrighty then.

85 minutes? Wow, this was screaming to be at least 2 hours.
I'm all for short and to the point, but that seems unusually short for a genre movie like this.

Is there a possibility the studio intentionally held back 1/3 of the movie for secrecy? Or any chance this is a bogus report as I'm not familiar with the site or its lack of named source(s)?

Well the first book is very lean and succinct, but the trailer doesn't look very faithful to that book at all. I hope this turns out well, especially with It looking so promising.

If that's confirmed...forget about seeing it in the theater. I've been a fan since 1988.

I'm with MBoyd. There is no way ANY justice can be done to this in 85 minutes. I'm calling bullshit.

I don't know what to think. If they're delivering a breezy movie, that's kind of what I expected from the trailer.
We all envisioned this meaty, epic film. Like Frank Darabont's The Dark Tower. But I don't know if that's what we're getting here. Also consider how many times it was on and off. This thread is ten years old!
We won't know until the studio speaks up or early reviews.

Haven't read the books and know little about the film so far. Is this just "book 1" like LotR or are they going at their own pace for the movie?
