David Ayer to write and direct Commando reboot

http://www.deadline.com/2010/04/fox-...ic/#more-36333

EXCLUSIVE: 20th Century Fox is going Commando again, setting David Ayer to write and direct a reboot of the 1985 film that became one of the building blocks that transformed Arnold Schwarzenegger from bodybuilder to superstar. Erwin Stoff and John Davis will produce the new version.

Ayer is the former Navy soldier who wrote Training Day and moved into directing with the dark dramas Harsh Times and Street Kings. He will put his own real-world spin on this original premise: a retired elite special forces operative sees his daughter kidnapped and is told she’ll die unless he gets on a plane and kills the rival of a nasty exiled dictator. In the original, Schwarzenegger jumped off the plane before takeoff, and killed everyone involved in the kidnap plot, in a real beefcake turn that followed Terminator. Ayer’s protagonist will be less brawny, but more skilled in covert tactics and weaponry. Hopefully the new version will hang onto some of the fun spirit of the original, the first of several film collaborations between Schwarzenegger and producer Joel Silver where they blew up everything in sight. Rae Dawn Chong played the flighty flight attendant who became the commando's reluctant accomplice, Dan Hedaya played the diabolical dictator, and a young Alyssa Milano played the kidnapped daughter.

It's the second big reboot of an Arnie action film for Fox. The studio has a July 9 release date on Predators, a new chapter of a franchise launched by Predators, the 1987 Schwarzenegger classic.

I wonder if his lead character will be named John Matrix.

Ok, you know what? THIS remake pisses me off. An Arnold action film remade. Just..no.

I dunno what that article is talking about but I'm not sure Predators was necessarily a reboot or remake. I can still see Predator taking place before Predators. I thought it was just another sequel that I am totally game for considering AvP sucked massive cock.

I thought "reboot" meant to restart a franchise. The sequel never got made, so it's not a franchise IMHO.

This is the exact thing that came to mind when I saw the thread title.

Bah... nothing can touch the original.

Can't they just add an S on the end instead and make it unrelated?

Commandos

I love this part.

It's just a typo but it makes me laugh more than it should.

Remember, Sully, when I promised to reboot you last? I lied.

They're treading on sacred ground with this one.

Re: David Ayer to write and direct Commando reboot

Ayer is actually a solid writer. I liked Training Day and thought Street Kings was a solid Cop thriller.

Hiring Ayer to write the movie is one thing, but getting it officially greenlighted will be another hurdle along with casting the lead.

The doubt isn't with Ayer.

It is the idea of remaking this movie. The movie could be remade (and could be done well), but it won't have the charm like the original.

It's funny. This is one of the few films where I'm a bit pissed. NoES or anything else doesn't piss me off. BUT THIS does. It's just...Arnold. you don't remake a movie like that. Kids are still growing up watching that on AMC or TNT or whatever plays it on TV.

Agreed. Not a fan of this being remade/rebooted/re-imagined (whatever they want to call it).

It's not like the original had a great premise that was lost in execution, it was good because Arnold was awesome at the time.

Stupid "reboot"

Does nobody at Fox understand that this film kicks an unholy amount of ass because of Arnold? Why even bother using the title again? Just write a similar film and market it like they did with Taken.

People bash Arnold for being a terrible actor, but I have always loved the guy and all his cheesy movies. The man has charisma. Commando is a generic movie that is memorable because of him. Why bother?

Re: David Ayer to write and direct Commando reboot

Sounds like another modern action movie where the hero isn't such a physical tough guy. That seems to be a lost aspect of action movies, where the hero doesn't think twice about physically fighting a villian. Now hero's have to outsmart the villian and have as little physical fighting as possible.

Maybe some sort of fear of weird copyright infringement? Or just the name and staying power that Commando had. People from the era really love that movie.
