Alien films?

No, this thread isn't going to be about what you might think.

Maybe I'm getting a bit too meta here, but I'm a big astronomy nerd and I've always wondered: assuming there are reasonably civilized alien races out in the cosmos, and they've developed on a similar path to us, do they have cinema? Now, I know there are countless factors to consider regarding chemical makeup, technology, intelliegence, etc. But, for me, at least, I think the idea of an alien race that makes films is kind of exciting. Imagine someone from another planet coming here and finding all the movies we have to offer.

Btw, no, I'm not high right now. Just postulating.

I'm not sure what you expect or imagine anyone is going to say in reply to this.

They are and they do have em but they're called "historical documents."

In seriousness, that's probably what an alien race might create but who can really say for certain.

I really don't know either. Just seeing if anyone else ever had similar thoughts.

Aliens are way more advanced than we will ever be. There technology is so great they have far better graphical games such as:

I have often wondered if there's a heaven, then do movie exist there? If not, then it ain't really heaven to me. If cinema does exist in heaven, then can we still watch movies that where made on 'Earth'? -eek-

Woah. [/keanu]

You mean like in Howard The Duck?

Re: Alien films?

Our films would probably be unwatchable to them, and theirs to us, because of the physical brain and eye differences.

Imagine what the alien equivalent of E.T. is like? Some dude riding around on the front of an aliens bike? ...I'd pay to see it.

Re: Alien films?

I hope when they arrive the only films they see are Summer School and Schindler's List. Let them wrap their heads around that shit.

It'd be funny if they only had HD DVD players. "Aw, shit! You can't watch are movies, these formats are not compatible!"

Do you think so? If the image is created using light (within the ranges we can see light), then we should be able to see their movies and they ours. If it's done by pheromones or something, then no (but then they wouldn't really be movies, would they? More like "sensies")

A better question would be how our movies would affect the aliens emotionally. I always wondered how Vulcans, who shun emotion, would make art if they existed.

You know, not too long ago I imagined something in a similar vein that may or may not be even more absurd.

Rather than aliens making films, though, it's the crew of a huge spaceship of humans who know nothing about Earth (they just take their giant ship's living conditions for granted the same way we do with Earth... "we're here because we're here, we were born into this giant gravity trap"). I don't have the mental energy to figure out the intergalactic multigenerational backstory at this moment.

Anyway the idea came up one day when idly thinking about how many sci-fi spaceship movies the Hollywood Earthlings have made. From 2001: A Space Odyssey to Star Trek V (deliberate comparative irony), humans have envisioned many different scenarios about life in someplace we know nothing about (such as UNCHARTED SPACE). Some of them have been pretty strange. So I imagined: What if a society of human beings, unquestioning their lifelong existence on a huge body of spacecraft, developed parallel to us technologically & artistically without ever having had charted a terrestrial body like Earth? What if their curiosity about the concept of inhabitable bodies led them to make adventure films about Earth that are totally off the mark. Like, I don't know, gravity pulls objects horizontally instead of vertically, we exert ourselves using forks as drinking utensils, we watch the news by inserting Beta tapes into microwaves... etc....

I'd hate to think about a film made by the Psychlos from Battlefield Earth. *shudder*

I'm sure they have movie forums too.

"Human" was a fantastic thriller/horror film!
"Humans" was one heck of an action flick!
"Human 3" sucked! Why the hell did they kill my two favorite characters!
"Human 4" was just meh, but still visually interesting.

Oh, and if there are aliens out there - no - I doubt they have movies. They probably live in tribes and are one-with-nature and just hunt and sit around a campfire and sing Kumbaya and shit.

That last one should be "Human Resurrection." -ohbfrank-
