Disney puts 'Tron Legacy' sequel in motion (exclusive)
“Tron Legacy” isn’t due until December, but Disney already is putting a sequel on its monorail track.
Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz, the “Lost” writers/executive producers who worked on “Legacy,” have begun writing a sequel to the studio’s sci-fi tentpole.
No details have been released because it is so early in the process.
Notwithstanding the question of whether the movie will be a hit, other topics to ponder are whether the sequel will focus on spinoff characters or center on a new adventure set in the “Tron” world. Insiders have suggested that Kitsis and Horowitz are working on a way to round the story into a trilogy.
No deals have been made with “Legacy” director Joseph Kosinski or cast members to return, though options were placed in the original deals, and Disney surely would hope to reunite all the elements if “Legacy” proves to be a hit. Also needing to be figured out is who would produce a sequel. Sean Bailey, a producer on “Legacy,” is now Disney’s president of production.
Still, with Bailey as production head and WME-repped Kitsis and Horowitz writing more “Tron,” Disney seems to be believe in what they have.

They can start writing all they want. It likely won't go into any phase of production until they get numbers back for Legacy.

It was rumored earlier in the week that there would be a Tron 3 teaser on the Blu-Ray release and according to Harry Knowles, he hears it's real:
Check out the post.
Can't wait to see the next installment.

Mildly interested as I did enjoy Legacy, but not sure if sequel will come off as going to the well one too many times...

I think it's much more Kosinski, whose sense of pacing and action is too slow and observant than exciting, who is responsible for the movie being so-so. I hear he worked on the script as well. Plus, if last time the writers were figuring out what to put in and what to leave out for the sake of this movie and the cartoon, hopefully this time they have a clearer focus.

Re: Tron 3 (Legacy sequel) - News, rumors, cast
Some people never enjoyed the first or the second for reasons I don't quite get. I'm all for a third installment if it's as beautiful and entertaining as the others. Wonder if Jeff Bridges will be in it if he's still capable of it by the time it's made.
I've read several publications calling Tron Legacy a bomb based on box office. I don't get that either. Maybe they were expecting Avatar box office figures.

Re: Tron 3 (Legacy sequel) - News, rumors, cast
The only way anyone can justify Legacy as a bomb is if they include the ridiculous $130M marketing costs in with the overall budget - which I don't.
I still don't get how they spent $170M on production, and $130M on marketing. That's just insane, and a set-up for failure. Where that $130M went on marketing is beyond me.
Right now it's only $7M away (domestic) from recouping production costs - which it will likely barely come ahead on. Far from a bomb.
