There are plenty of filmmakers that are overlooked or taken for granted. David Fincher and his multiple Oscar nominations in the past few years is not one of them.

Girl With A Dragon Tattoo (2011) was disappointing, it was well directed but vacant. Most tension was shattered by girl just showing up and nonchalantly solving the problem with superhuman accuracy to the point of annoyance. I think only Fincher could have pulled this slop off as well as it came out.

But, other than that, it's plausible to suggest that a lot of Swedes speak English fluently and choose to do so. I found that a lot of the characters did not have Swedish accents in this film. It was almost like it was a bunch of Brits who just happened to live in Sweden all their lives.

Well, the Nazi bits in the story have no real meaning if the story doesn't take place in a country that's at least somewhere in mainland Europe.

Fincher talks about it either in the commentary or the behind the scenes material, saying that the story and characters are quintessentially Swedish; moving it to America just wouldn't work. It would be like moving Goodfellas to a French setting; the characters are quintessentially American and, while there are gangsters in France, the story wouldn't have the same impact with the location change.

Dragon Tattoo Sequel Moving Forward
Source: Entertainment Weekly January 3, 2012
Sony's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, which cost about $90 million to make (not counting marketing costs), has earned $60 million at the domestic box office and will still be hitting many international territories in January. So, while some are saying it's underperforming, it's no surprise that the studio is moving forward with plans to make the sequel, The Girl Who Played with Fire.
“[Dragon Tattoo] continues to do strong business and nothing has changed with respect to development of the next book,” a Sony rep told Entertainment Weekly. "Development continues” on the sequel and Steven Zaillian is still working on the script as planned.
It is unclear whether David Fincher will return to direct at this point, but Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig are both signed for the other two films.

Saw the Mara version, and really liked it. Great performances and direction. I'll likely check out the Swedish version now.
One somewhat major plot hole that I saw, forgive me if this has been mentioned, I didn't read every post in this thread.

Daniel Craig’s to be cut from ‘The Girl Who Played With Fire’?

Yeah, Craig is playing hardball and wants tons of money for the sequel. Granted, he knows he's a hot commodity again with Skyfall making almost a BILLION dollars in the box office. I hope he comes back but if he doesn't then oh well. As long as Rooney and Fincher come back, I'm still in.

It's hard to believe he'd want to continue this saga without Craig. I can envision a scenario where his agents/lawyers could do some wrangling and get him released from his contact.

I hope Fincher drops this and does something more interesting. I just can't see him being committed to a trilogy of remakes.
Also IMO the 2 sequels (Swedish films) compared to the first were terrible.

I've seen all three films and honestly dragon tattoo is the strongest the others are like Hannibal and Red Dragon compared to it. Weaksauce.

I hated everything about the American remake. I can't blame Craig for pricing himself out of doing another one.
