I completely trust Fincher with this material. If you've seen Zodiac you must know that he doesn't need to show-off any flashy technique to tell a compelling story.

Now casting Brad Pitt is another thing altogether...

I haven't read any of the books, but have seen the TV-"series" (they are, in total, roughly 1.5 hours longer than the movies), and I'd say the ending is definite.
A continuation could be done, but there is no need for it.

Looks like Daniel Craig is about to sign on for the lead role. Much better choice than Brad Pitt.

As one of the main people here bitching about the potential casting (& against a US remake in general) I think Craig would be an excellent choice provided he can pull off a different side of him. He is so cold as Bond, & Blomkvist is uber-charming in a self-depricating way that puts everyone at ease with him. Never really seen Craig do anything like that, but he is still a great choice. Way better than the other two supposed front-runners for the role. Will be extremely interesting now to see who they get as Salander, since the entire crux of the series depends on the chemistry between the two actors.

I think Craig would do well too.

I just finished reading the 3rd book and it does tie up just about everything. Although the 2nd and 3rd book are one long continuous story so I would imagine they would have to be both planned together after the first one.

Re: The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2009 & 2012 editions)

A tad off topic but there is another Swedish crime writer which is probably as well known worlwide as Stieg Larsson. His name is Henning Mankell and his inspector Wallander novels are fantastic. In fact, everybody here was reading "Wallander" novels a few years ago, well before the "Millenium" craze began.

The Mankell novels were adapted in Sweden as a tv series but it wasn't very good. Afterwards however, the BBC did their own adaptations starring Kenneth Branagh as Wallander (all shot on location in Sweden), and they are excellent. Currently, Series 1 and 2 (3 films/adaptations each) are out on DVD, and Series 3 is in production.

This is "Series 1"

Probably old news by now, but watching the extras on the R1 DVD tonight, Noomi Rapace said that she would not want to reprise her role as Lisbeth.

Re: The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2009 & 2012 editions)

I'm pretty sure Ebert is mistaken but in his review for "Fire" he said this
It's also an advantage that the actors are not conventional star types. That will be the tricky part in the Hollywood versions. Carey Mulligan and Daniel Craig have been cast for David Fincher's 2012 remake of “Dragon,” and they're very good, but are they too mainstream? How about, oh, say, Ed Norton and the non-"Twilight" Kristen Stewart?

Also he gave the sequel 3.5 out of 4

Yeah Mulligan isn't confirmed, though I do believe Daniel Craig is.

Edit: Nevermind, he's still "in negotiations" for the role.

The thing in all these reports thats killing me is they keep referring to Dragon Tattoo as "a surprise hit in the US last year", correct me if I'm wrong but didn't it just come out theatrically in the US a few months ago?

I don't see what being mainstream would have to do with anything.

Not sure what specific reports you're referring too, but maybe they mean the book?

Re: The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2009 & 2012 editions)

Does anyone know if this film qualifies for any U.S. awards this year? Specifically the Oscars. Because I think Rapace should get a Best Actress nomination. She was fucking fantastic in this. I'd also like to see the film get a Best Picture nod as well.
