That and the first one was already released quite a while ago. I would think that the hype for the sequel has already died off quite a bit by now let alone in 2016 when the film is set to release. Also I don't see why the franchise needs three sequels right off the bat.

Guys, there are people who have convinced themselves that Pandora is a real place. There is an audience for the sequels.

Re: Avatar 2 (2016, Cameron) S: Worthington, Saldana

No surprise:
UPDATED: Avatar stars Sam Worthington and Zoë Saldana will reprise their roles in the next three sequels to James Cameron‘s 2009 sci-fi fantasy blockbuster, Fox announced today. Worthington returns to the franchise as Jake Sully, the wheelchair-bound Marine who finds new life on the alien world of Pandora with the Na’vi people and Neytiri, a Na’vi huntress, in the first $2.8 billion-scoring film. Saldana will reprise her Neytiri role joining Worthington in Avatar 2, Avatar 3, and Avatar 4 which Cameron and Jon Landau will produce via Lightstorm Entertainment. These are new deals for Worthington and Saldana but are basically in line with their previous deals, Deadline is hearing. When a third sequel was added to Cameron’s grand plan, renegotiations were in order.

The currently untitled sequels will be filmed back to back with Avatar 2 set to release in December 2016. The subsequent sequels will follow in December 2017 and 2018, respectively. A start date is still TBA but Fox is eyeing December 2014/January 2015 to begin filming through March 2015. They have to give the actors four months of prep. Deadline hears the plan is to shoot the films’ extensive motion capture scenes first, then film all the live-action footage. But a source with knowledge of the production says it’s ultimately up to Cameron to decide if that’s how they play it. Economical back-to-back sequel shooting worked for Peter Jackson’s recent Hobbit sequels. And with WETA running point on the sequels it will streamline VFX continuity from film to film, especially given the introduction of new and different creatures and worlds. Meanwhile Cameron is scripting Avatar 2 with Josh Friedman (War of the Worlds), Avatar 3 with Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver (Rise of the Planets of the Apes), and Avatar 4 with Shane Salerno (Savages, Salinger).

Really not sure I am interested in 3 more Avatar movies. Not really all that hyped for one. Cameron has surprised me before (I though Titanic and Avatar would both suck and flop) but seems a tall order to surprise me again.

IMO, 1/2 of the people that saw the 1st movie went because of "OMG! 3D movie!" -- not because of the story or characters

3D is not really a reason to see a movie anymore.

And it's not exactly like his career took off since being the "it" guy a few years ago.

3 sequels planned already seems like overkill, the demand or hype around more movies doesn't seem to be there to me. But i'm probably wrong.

It's possible, but you're still left with a 4 billion take for these 3 movies.

Snake oil salesman that he is, I'm sure Cameron will break box office records again as dress cliches up to convince us that they're "something we've never seen before" again.

Maybe Kevin Costner can direct a ripoff of one of the Avatar sequels.

Or he could just direct a movie with the same storyline as Run of the Arrow. Oh, wait...

Sigourney Weaver and Stephen Lang will be returning.

Sigourney Weaver will play different character in ‘Avatar’ sequels

Sigourney Weaver’s character died in battle at the end of Avatar, but James Cameron isn’t letting that get in the way of bringing the actress back for the three sequels he begins filming later this year.

Dr. Grace Augustine, the idealistic but tough-as-nails scientist who advocated peaceful outreach with the Na’vi, won’t be resurrected. Instead, Cameron has other ideas.

“Sigourney and I have a long creative history, dating back to 1985 when we made Aliens. We’re good friends who’ve always worked well together, so it just feels right that she’s coming back for the Avatar sequels,” the director said in a statement.

“Her character of Grace Augustine, as fans know, died in the first movie, so she’s playing a different and in many ways more challenging character in the upcoming films. We’re both looking forward to this new creative challenge, the latest chapter in our long and continuing collaboration.”

Weaver isn’t the only Avatar actor who will appear in the sequels even though their character perished in the first film.

Stephen Lang, who played the scar-faced Marine Miles Quaritch, will also return, as a revitalized version of the same villain.

Sam Worthington and Zoë Saldana will reprise their characters in the as-yet untitled sequels, which will be filmed back-to-back. The release of the next Avatar movie will be in December 2016, with the second

Back-to-back sequels ALWAYS work well. Except for when they don't. Which is every single time.

I am hoping that after Avatar 6 is released the final scene is Sam Worthington waking up from his journey from Earth to Pandora and we find out it was all dream.
