2 and 3 are wrapped. 4 is in production… mostly mo-cap has been done so far.

2 and 3 wrapped probably years ago. 4 will finish in 5-10 years. My grandkids can watch them in theaters in 2050.

Regardless of what? Box office? Disney/FOX chose to pay Cameron all that money up front to make them. If they're good, then that's great. If not, then that's on them.

Has anyone else ever made several sequels at once ? I know LOTR did all three movies simultaneously , but never heard of four movies being made all at once.

I imagine the Avatar movies are somewhat unique in that the budget for shooting Principal Photography is probably a lot lower than filming another series’ sequels all at once. They could probably film Avatar 2-4 relatively inexpensive and over a short period of time then spread the bulk of the budget over years with the post-production stuff.

So 2 & 3 seem like sure things now, but even with them reportedly shooting some mo-cap and principle photography for 4 & 5, the post production on those likely hasn't started, and Fox/Disney could just cut their losses and not finish those films, since the post-production is likely the big money suck for these films.

Exactly. I know Cameron has had a chip on his shoulder since Titanic but the guy sometimes plays the underdog card a bit too often. He’s James Fucking Cameron. Of course theses movies are going to be finished.

On a tangential note, James Cameron's Masterclass is great. He goes over scenes from Terminator, Aliens, Avatar, and Titanic in detail, explaining his choices and building tension, introducing characters. Better than a straight up commentary, since some of them are like 20 minute + breakdowns.

I knew that there were going to be some underwater sequences in the sequels but I didn’t realize the majority of 2 and 3 would take place underwater. All the floaty things should look cool in 3D.

I saw the first in theaters and loved the environment, but yes, the dialogue and story were not great.

I really think this would make an amazing VR experience. I enjoyed the 3D in the theaters, and later on my TV.

Let's be realistic, that 3D surcharge is a big reason Avatar made as much money as it did (it's just outside the top ten in all time ticket sales so that boost from 3D showing was huge), with that gimmick a thing of the past, what will be the hook for these films? I don't know a single person who was asking for more Avatar. I thought it was entertaining enough, but nothing special (ranks near the bottom of Cameron films for me).

Unlike the haters in this thread, both my wife and I really enjoyed the first Avatar the 4 times we've seen it since 2010 when I bought the Extended Collector's Edition on DVD. Last summer I found a clean Extended Blu-Ray Collector's Edition at the flea market for cheap so next time we watch it the visuals should be even better. Though my wife probably doesn't think about it very much (if at all, even though she'll probably be awestruck by it when we see it), I'm excited for Avatar 2 and will more than likely add it to our collection when it comes out on physical media. I just wish he'd get fucking done with it already.

I gave up hope on The Abyss coming out on blu-ray (or UHD) a long time ago. I just don't think it will happen. Cameron dragged his feet for too long, and the window for disc releases of catalog material is rapidly closing at the major studios. And without any sequels, remakes, or reboots of The Abyss or True Lies to promote, there just doesn't seem to be any kind of will to release them. And, on top of that, Disney now owns Fox, and they seem to have little interest in physical media these days outside of new release movies.

To the folks saying that True Lies and The Abyss will never see a proper North American Blu/UHD release, never say never. I never thought that Alligator would get a UHD release of all formats, and had pretty much given up hope, yet here we are...Shout stepped up to put out the film on UHD. Now, I will grant that most people do not hold Alligator with the same regard as they might for The Abyss or True Lies, but stranger things have happened and maybe Cameron will take advantage of the push around Avatar 2's eventual release on UHD to finally okay the release of True Lies and The Abyss. Also, I forgot that seeing films in 3D in the theater was still a thing, but if any film deserves a 3-D presentation Avatar 2 certainly does. The 3-D for Avatar was so good that at times I felt like I was on the planet or on a ship floating in zero gravity.

I will certainly put in the effort to see this film in theaters.
