Which 5 of the 10 Best Pic noms would have made the cut?

I don't see how that's possible to think. All Avatar has going for it is the effects. The Dark Knight effects were great (especially since they were practical effects for the most part) and had great acting and a great story to boot.
Avatar is a pretty movie. The Dark Knight was a far more "complete" movie, and that's what Best Pictures should be.
And for the record, I loved Titanic but it didn't deserve a Best Picture win. It wasn't quite the complete package. I think Star Trek deserved Avatar's slot, actually. Glad that District 9 is there though, as that is also a much better example of a "complete" movie.
My list:
District 9
The Hurt Locker
Up in the Air
Precious (haven't seen but it screams Oscar bait...and it sounds like it deserves it)
A Serious Man (which I haven't seen but have heard great things about)

I agree that Dark Knight was a better film than Avatar... but I still don't think Dark Knight was Best Picture material (though I feel that way about a lot of the nominees, so it's just my own taste). I've got to see several more of the Best Picture nominees, but I'm rooting for Basterds.
If Avatar wins, it will essentially be winning for economic and technological reasons. Hollywood is really excited about the success of this 3D nonsense and sees a lot of cash flow in it's future, so they will happily reward the movie that made 3D truly mainstream and in making it Best Picture will be sending the audience this message- see 3D movies, pay more for tickets. The message of the movie is also irresistible to Academy voters- "America sucks, the Native Americans and mid-east jihadists are noble peaceful environmentalists, and America sucks".

Which was...one of the 5 nominees for Best Picture when it came out, as people believe Avatar would have been on the "short list."

I don't think Avatar is a shoo-in, but it may have the best chance. I think it's either going to be that or The Hurt Locker.

LOCKS
Avatar - Too big to ignore
Hurt Locker - Too many pre-wins
Inglourious Basterds - Tarantino
Up in the Air - An early front-runner
MAYBE
Precious - Early front runner, losing steam
Up - Apology for WALL-E snub
NO
The Blind Side - If it wasn't for its leggy run, nobody would care
District 9 - They're not giving away 2 spots to sci-fi
An Education - Has a better shot of winning BA

Watched a friend's screener of "An Education" the other night. Really nothing special. Good acting, pretty to look at, but the story is a big nothing. I was left wondering "who cares?"

You've obviously never been a 16-year old girl vying for the attention of a seedy 30-year-old man!
