Like most time travel movies, BTTF says more about the era in which it was made than the era that the character(s) travel to. Case in point is the scene where Marty goes into the diner and tries to order a drink. Had he travelled forward to 2010 and entered, say, a Starbucks, the resulting conversation would be almost identical.

For the American zeitgeist, maybe something like Wall Street or Less Than Zero.

My vote goes to...
Some Kind of Wonderful

Not just because it's a John Hughes movie, but because of how down to earth and real the story is. And IMO it has the best soundtrack out of all the 80's Hughes teen movies.
"Is this detention?"
"Actually it's your mothers house. And we're havin' a party."

Top Gun, for hitting everything on this checklist:
Incidentally, that checklist is much funnier if you can get yourself to hear it being narrated by Peter Griffin.
- Prominent 80s soundtrack, including one power ballad and one rock anthem
- Rebellious youth whose abrasive individualism is ultimately embraced by everyone who once rejected him after he proves himself
- Memorable sidekick
- Script laden with catch-phrases and moments guaranteed to be quoted by adolescent viewers ad nauseum
- Reflects the values of the Reagan 80s: At-times-almost-laughable, patriotic machismo and a familiar, if uncomfortable, relationship with the Soviets.
- One mentor who understands the misguided youth--typically with firsthand knowledge of his father and/or some haunting bit from his past that has driven him to his current state of mind--who sets him straight by seeing the promise within.
Incidentally, that checklist is much funnier if you can get yourself to hear it being narrated by Peter Griffin.

Update: Ha! I posted that after looking only at Page 1. I hadn't seen MinLShaw's post yet. It was absolutely, positively the movie that came to mind when I read the thread topic.
