Ok sorry about my grammar but I for one would like to think that somewere, someone cares about american cinema.
That is to say the lack of caring about a country at time would pride itself in making memorable films.
They just don't care anymore it's all about dollars and cents not the craft and I will say american cinema is now dead.

I'll start by saying I have not seen Avatar (and have no desire to)
While the box office numbers are impressive it must be noted this movie is definately the beneficiary of good timing.
Just looking at what it has gone up against for the last 6 weeks, the competition for mass audience viewership is just laughable.
The only competition this movie has had is the choice of staying home in the winter and not seeing anything.

Alvin and the Chipmunks Squeakquel - over $200 million
Sherlock Holmes - closing in on $200 million
It's Complicated - $100 million
Also, The Blind Side, which keeps chugging along.
There's been plenty of tough competition. Face it, folks, this thing is a phenomenon.

I also have no desire to see Avatar but I don't understand all of the hatred for it. It seems like it's exactly the type of film that would have a lot of success and be enjoyed by the public at large. Granted, it's made more money than anyone could have realistically expected it to and that probably leads to a backlash from some people. My hope is that some of the money it makes allows something I want to see get made.
Truth is, I've seen about thirty minutes of footage from the film and none of it makes me the least bit enthusiastic about it. Obviously, a lot of people don't agree with me. It's all a matter of opinion anyway. I'm sure it's an expertly made film that just doesn't do anything for me; that doesn't make my opinion right. Some people seem to have a grudge against blockbuster films on principle and I don't get that. Many are pretty bad but there are also quite a few classics of cinema that were big budget blockbusters in their day. The Hurt Locker and District 9 were the biggest movies I saw last year so what do I know. Just like other people I know what I like and an awful lot of them liked Avatar.

Why bother making great films like Legion and The Tooth Fairy, when moviegoers are just going to turn up their nose at it for tripe like Avatar? Even modern classics like Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel can barely break $200 Million. It's a dark day.

I cried (and died a bit inside) when Avatar became the top grossing movie of 2009. Transformers 2 was far superior story writing.

When Avatar takes the top "All-time" spot, I demand a cinema-going equivalent of an asterisk next to its name: 2-D ticket sales should be listed in blue on the left and 3-D ticket sales should be listed in red on the right.

I wholeheartedly agree. And ticket sales to teenage girls for Titanic 's box office should be listed separately, maybe in pink. Oh, and tickets sold to "fanboys" for The Dark Knight could be separated with a little Batman emoticon. What color should we choose for LOTR fanatics? After all, those ticket sales shouldn't count towards the real box office total, right?

*Haven't seen Avatar either. It looks like it's good visually but storywise it just seems ... meeh. So I've really got no idea how it's got this much staying power (unless people really do keep going back just to see Pandora)

Yeah, with reviews that stated TF2 was "the male teenage cinematic equivalent of snorting cocaine off a hooker's ass" (I'm not making this up), how could you NOT believe it was the best movie of the year.

yeah, attack me with the troll doll because it is completely inconceivable to you that someone could really prefer TF2 to Avatar.

I can see someone liking "Transformers 2" more than "Avatar," but the idea that someone would call it the best movie of the year is what's inconceivable. Unless you only saw two movies. Otherwise, Jesus Tap-dancing Christ.

Avatar has passed Titanic International, World Wide should happen in a day or two.
http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSN2414728620100124
LOS ANGELES, Jan 24 (Reuters) - "Titanic" just hit an iceberg named "Avatar."
James Cameron's sci-fi spectacular replaced his maritime melodrama as the biggest international release of all time during the weekend and is on the verge of claiming its worldwide crown, which also includes North American receipts, distributor 20th Century Fox said on Sunday.
The News Corp <NWSA.O>-owned studio said "Avatar" has sold $1.841 billion worth of tickets worldwide during its unbroken six-week reign, and was a day or so away from surpassing the seemingly insurmountable $1.843 billion racked up by "Titanic" in 1997-1998.
The international portion stands at $1.288 billion, eclipsing the $1.242 billion haul of "Titanic."
In North America, "Avatar" may have to wait up to two weeks to sink the $601 million total of "Titanic," Fox said. Moviegoers in the United States and Canada have chipped in $552.8 million, enough to replace 2008's "The Dark Knight" ($533 million) as the second-biggest movie of all time.
Data are not adjusted for inflation, and "Avatar" ticket sales got an additional boost from premium pricing for 3-D screenings. Imax Corp <IMAX.O> said its big-screen engagements have sold a record $134 million worth of tickets worldwide.
The biggest movie of all time in North America -- adjusted for inflation -- is 1939's "Gone with the Wind," with sales of almost $1.5 billion, according to tracking firm Box Office Mojo. "Avatar" ranks No. 26 by that measure.
"AVATAR" RULES IN FRANCE, CHINA
During the latest weekend, "Avatar" earned $36 million in North America and $107 million from 111 international markets, far outpacing other offerings.
It led the field in at least 29 foreign markets, including France ($123 million to date), China ($102 million), Germany ($96 million), Russia ($95 million) and Britain ($93 million).

Glad this was included. Titanic is #6 on that list, and ticket prices are a lot higher than they were in 1997...plus the markup for 3D IMAX.

Yeah it's worth noting, though challenging to compare with since Gone with the Wind played for years in theaters. Avatar will be gone by May.

Too true. I remember seeing Gone with the Wind for the first time -- in the the theater in the late 1970's / early 1980's. It had a lot of revival screenings between the time it was released and the advent of home video.

You didn't have the internet then either, or 500 TV channels vying for your attention.
