Very cool. I'm looking forward to reading Tarantino's books once he retires, although I can't imagine what it'll be like getting him to put cohesive ideas down on paper.

read the transcript, great read, great discussion.

Loved Cameron's little True Romance nod to Tarantino.

Is Peter Jackson really hobbit sized then? Or is he pulling off one of those optical illusions that he used in LOTR?

Saw this the other day. Pretty good, but Lee Daniels' demeanour throughout the entire thing bugged me.

Tarantino to Jackson: "I drink your water, I drink it up."

Probably because he's a hack compared to the other people in the room and realizes his fifteen minutes of fame are ticking. The guy got lucky with an average melodrama that people ate up as the "cause film of 2009."

That is bizarre. His head looks about half the size of Tarentino's. Of course Tarentino has a big head but still.

I'm just amazed that she's so gorgeous. Probably the most attractive female director I've ever seen.

Also I agree w/ Tarantino, as a student filmmaker I'm all about film. I don't like the current look of digital for my interpreted style of filmmaking. Maybe when I get older I'll embrace, I love learning about it though...and I'll still follow on it, but for now I'm a film guy.

Yeah, I actually want to see Tartantino and Nolan have a debate with Jackson and Cameron about digital versus film. That would be great.

oh fuck. That'd be great. I can see Tarantino and Cameron getting into it, while Nolan and Jackson may have a much milder debate as well.

Re: Roundtable with Tarantino, Cameron, Jackson, Reitman, Bigelow and Daniels

That was really interesting. I didn't care that Tarantino did most of the talking... even though I agreed with him. I thought James Cameron put down the whole film festival draw (ie Tarantino and Reitman) I guess it's just different tastes.

And I guess it's a sure thing they'll all be nominated for Directing Oscars.

Re: Roundtable with Tarantino, Cameron, Jackson, Reitman, Bigelow and Daniels

well....isn't the list only for 5 noms in the directing category?

yeah, kinda winced when Cameron was talking about Festival Films.

I'd assume that Jackson isn't in that list cuz the Lovely Bones hasn't set critics into a positive daze like the others' works. I guess Bigelow and Cameron are on good terms after divorcing?

Re: Roundtable with Tarantino, Cameron, Jackson, Reitman, Bigelow and Daniels

There's only five nominations, this interview was done a while ago with where I guees they thought the best Director race was headed. Then Lovely Bones opened to mixed reviews.... but minus Jackson that's a pretty safe group of five. I still hold that Daniels is on the cusp of exclusion.

There's this really interesting tension going on in the interivew. There's Tarantino and Reitman, festival directors who seem to hold film (as in the actual, 35mm stuff) with this romantic value. They produced two of the best character and story driven films this year, while on the other side Jackson and Cameron are the big spectacle, special-effects and tech-heavy directors embracing the digital format, discussing filmmaking for the mainstream global audience. There's kind of this silent battle of wills.

Meanwhile you've got Bigelow off to the side probably having a chuckle at these guys comparing dick lengths.

Cameron comes off as a little arrogant, like he knows the argument is moot because at the end of the day, despite Quentin having his most successful film ever, he's going to make ten times that and a second billion dollars. From what I read, though, he and Bigelow are still good friends.

I thought the best part of the interview was when the directors were talking about playing music between takes and Bigelow jumped in with "I would love to have that luxury. We didn't have time to mess around between takes."

Are you sure Reitman was defending film? He made the comment that "I've seen enough bad prints of my movies that I..." It sounded to me that he likes it, at least for projection (I think it was more about projection than the shooting format anyway).

Re: Roundtable with Tarantino, Cameron, Jackson, Reitman, Bigelow and Daniels

I don't think Jackson likes Tarantino, cause I've never heard him address someone by name, and that is usually a sign of frustration or anger.

Cool interview--the transcript has a lot more of the conversation than the video clips. Thanks for posting both, Paul1957.

Re: Roundtable with Tarantino, Cameron, Jackson, Reitman, Bigelow and Daniels

I think that Reitman was defending digital presentations, not siding with Tarantino.

Prior to this interview. I didn't know Lee Daniels by name. Tarantino named Precious as one of his year's favorites. Maybe that's how he got on there. At least he was self-aware, and said that he's still an outsider.

Watch it again, and observe everyone else's faces, as one director speaks.

Did I hear Peter Jackson say, 'I'm not sure where I was giong with The Lovely Bones'? I assume that he wasn't referring to Lord of the Rings. But it wasn't made apparent which he was talking about.

I wonder if Tarantino will really retire at 60. That only leaves another five-or-so movies. But I guess that is a 30 year career. I'm getting old.
