God. Damn. Them's some impressive numbers. The big question is how it'll do after all the holiday crap is over. With nothing big opening next weekend, I wonder what it'll pull in.

I predict "Lost In Space 2" will be the first movie to knock "Avatar" from the No. 1 spot.

it'd be great if Avatar could last all the way till March so it can go up against Clash of the Titans like Titanic went up against The Man in the Iron Mask.

Avatar is a lot bigger then I expected it to be. Worldwide I think it's going to beat The Dark Knight for sure, it could even beat it in the US.

Is anyone else predicting it to go $1B worldwide gross? What makes you think it'll beat TDK "for sure"?

Considering that the film was at $760 Million worldwide as of Thursday, and probably at $800 Million after yesterday's numbers, it makes sense.

If Avatar is sitting at around $340 by Sunday night, it only has $160 Million to go to beat Dark Knight's world wide numbers.

Dark Knight was an exception to most situations, since it made less than half of it's money internationally (US $533.3 Million / International $468.6 Million; Total $1.001 Billion.)

Wow, I didn't think this would flop like a lot of others did, but I didn't expect it to do anywhere near this well either. James Cameron has the Midas touch. I'm going to finally check this out this week myself I think.

I think that's a foregone conclusion. It should end up with 1.2, or 1.3billion worldwide.

Random thought. Dileep Rao seems to have quite the career trajectory right now, not bad for an acting teacher whose big claim to fame thus far has been winning $34,400 on Jeopardy. (wikipedia)

first movie: Sam Raimi's Drag Me To Hell
second movie: James Cameron's Avatar
third movie: Christopher Nolan's Inception

How the hell does that happen? Even if they are smaller parts.

I certainly think Watchman was a better film than Avatar and it didn't do nowhere near as good.

Because The Dark Knight made barely over a billion world wide and Avatar is already at almost 800 million and will countinue to make money.

Watchmen had a better storyline. Better film though? Naw.. not imo. Not that Avatar was great, but it was at least entertaining and visually imaginative. Watchmen was a pretty stale recreation of the graphic novel that moved at a glacial pace and had jarring musical cues.

Plus Avatar has a far more appealing premise in general, and the recycled story it used is almost always popular. (Dances with Wolves, The Last Samurai, etc; ) Plus a higher ticket price... I guess there was no demand for 3d blue penis.

I honestly was dissapointed in Watchmen. It didn't live up to my expectations and has no replay value what so ever for me.

This is certainly going to reinvigorate M. Night's career.

Re: Weekend Box-Office 1/1 - 1/3 : "Avatar" continues to bomb

^ They dropped Avatar from that title. Which is a little odd, but whatever.

^^ Yeah... I didn't dislike it the first time I saw it, it was a little bit of a chore to sit through and had more than a few painfully cheesy parts, but there was something mildly appealing about seeing it unfold even though it never felt like a movie... that being said, it is one of the least rewatchable movies I've come across. Plus the more I thought about it, the less I liked it.

So, who's going to tell him he's got cancer and only 2 more movies left?

Yes... It does have the advantage of the double whammy bonus. 3-D premiums and IMAX 3-D premiums. It's shattering all of the IMAX records in sight, and I sure general 3-D runs as well.

BTW, with Avatar gets the most attention (and rightfully so), The Blind Side keeps chugging along. Down only 4% and surpassed $200 million.

He never, ever was the star of his classic ,great movies. It's not like the movies were great because of him. Cameron is another story. But THE ABYSS wasn't a hit if I remember.

Yeah, that is probably 2009's biggest sleeper. Wish I could remember what boxoffice.com predicted it would make. It I recall, it was something like 80M.
