Avatar will slay next weekend based on nothing super hot being out now. Blind Side and NM are both fading enough that I think Avatar can do $65-75m opening.

wow, how sad and front loaded New Moon was. I mean, it made what 145 million opening weekend and a month later its at 266, it will be very lucky to get to 300 mil.

Twilight made $384 million worldwide. New Moon has made $580 million worldwide.

Yeah, real sad for Summit.

Re: Weekend Box Office 12/11-13/09.

well, here at least. yeah i know its made a shit load of money, but when their fans (and certain insiders that are also fans), thought it would be the biggest movie of the year, it hasn't lived up to their expectations. Granted yes, it only needs about 10 million, but i would love it if the Hangeover actually had a better final number in the states

I'm thrilled to see The Princess and the Frog open so strongly. I hope it has legs (insert terrible 'frog leg' joke here).

$28m doesn't seem as strong as I would have thought.

Re: Weekend Box Office 12/11-13/09.

Home on the Range made $13,880,771 on its opening weekend.

Brother Bear made $19,404,492.

Treasure Planet made $12,083,248.

It's not that impressive of a take but I'm sure Disney is pretty happy with it. It should do well during the holidays.

What are the top movies of the year. Even if New Moon isn't the #1, its right up there with the top ones. Like it or hate it, it has done crazy business. A month later and has only dropped to #4 for the week. I'm pretty sure it will hit $300M before its done.

New Moon is #5 but is the only one of the top 5 still in theaters. It'll definitely at least take the #4 spot.

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen: $402 mil
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince: $302 mil
Up: $293 mil
The Hangover: $277 mil
New Moon: $267 mil

Who thought it was going to be the biggest movie of the year? Maybe hardcore fans did but what insiders thought it would have the highest domestic gross of the year?

... but put in that context, it's a blockbuster for the House of Mouse.

Did PATF cost any more than those other hand-drawn Disney flicks or did they just decide to make a good one?

It was also released in June. If think that if TPATF opened in the summer it would have made more.

Hilarious how there are still people who think NM is under-performing when it's just shy of $300 mil and has been firmly lodged in the top 5 for weeks.

Re: Weekend Box Office 12/11-13/09.

I expect PATF to do good business over the Christmas break. So even though it might not have the largest openeing weekend ever, it'll do OK. Add in the merchandising & eventual DVD sales will have Disney's investors happy.

Add the fact that Disney can add PAFT's girl to their Disney Princesses line-up, that money train will go on for years.

I don't think anyone's saying it underperformed, just surprised at the big drops.

Was anyone really surprised with the big drop? I was more surprised that it broke the 1 day record. No matter how people spin it with the "surprised" big drops, New Moon is still one of the most profitable movies of the year.

/\ Speaking of big drops, Transylmania dropped close to 95% this weekend.

Granted, they yanked it out of every theatre in my area, but that is nuts!

But it sure seems some people like to downplay the success.
