I don't think most people understand the question as the OP presented it.
Star vehicles are films that were made to create a star: someone the studio signed recently or someone that was previously close to an unknown starring in their own movie. If you're a supporting character or a villain or anything like that, it's not a star vehicle. The movie has to be about the star's character. More often than not, the movie is created/written for that actor in mind.
A lot of the responses here seem to be to "Name a famous person and a bad movie they were in."

Funny, he's the ONLY one who seemed memorable in that movie. Bale was one-note the entire movie, the kid who played Reese didn't have much screen time, and then I dont know what

whatever happened with Claire Daines? She was on a great track to stardom and then I guess Brokedown Palace and Mod Squad happened. Anyone know what she's been up to now?

Vin Diesel was in Pitch Black, The Fast and the Furious, and XXX. He was being pitched as a future star. But now he's the new Van Damme.

While he had been working for years and was even nominated for a supporting Oscar years before, I would say Joaquin Phoenix in Walk the Line. That was really the first time a movie was really put on his back and promoted him as the top star, with Reese Witherspoon right under him. He has had a few flicks after that, but nothing has come close to WTL. I still don't buy him as a lead actor, I never have for some reason. I don't know if his lack of success is because others still feel like me, or his on decision when he decided to act goofy.
Speaking of him, has he even been in the news for anything at all lately? Other than "crazy moments of 2009" lists here at the end of the year?
I could sit here and make an arguement that M. Night Shyamalan films slow down careers, if not stop them. The only problem with that is that his films are more about M. Night's own ego than actually trying to promote any one or two stars for the most part. Heck, I could tie it all back to Joaquin Phoenix if I really wanted to.
