I'm happy there's no Invictus.

I don't know why I end up rooting against Eastwood films... he's become such Oscar bait.

Have you seen it yet? I haven't. I absolutely hated "Gran Torino" so I'm glad that didn't get any Oscar nominations. But Eastwood is a pretty good director and I liked all of his other movies these past 10 plus years.

Princess and the Frog as best film of the year? It was good, but not that good.

Haven't seen that either but yeah...isn't that a bizarre pick? How about the top 3 being animated! I still have 10 or more movies of 2009 to see before I can compile MY list, but I can you that "Inglorious Basterds" will surely be #1 and "Star Trek" somewhere on there.

And what's funny is that my favorite animated film of the year, Coraline, isn't on it anywhere.

How dare they not include more fanboy favorites!

By including Fantastic Mr. Fox and District 9 I thought they were playing to fanboys.

I think that it's a decent list:

I loved Up, The Hurt Locker, The White Ribbon, Of Time and the City, and District 9. They will all be in my personal top 20 of the year.

I thought that Thirst was okay, but I didn't like it that much.

I need to see The Princess and the Frog, Fantastic Mr. Fox, Up in the Air, and A Single Man.

No Sam Rockwell for Moon?

Well there's no doubt any of the animated stuff will win any relevant Oscars.

I hate how it's impossible for the average moviegoer to see most of these. The White Ribbon? A Single Man? Of Time and the City? I've never even heard of these.

I like these lists because they're different than most will end up being, but I think they should swap out Michael Jackson with Sharlto Copley.

Chris Waltz was by far the best performance of the year for me. I loved that character.

10. Michael Jackson as Michael Jackson in Michael Jackson's This Is It
Good pick, but I thought Michael Moore as Michael Moore in Capitalism: A Love Story was a stronger performance.

Well, it's certainly not impossible for the average moviegoer to see any of these, especially if they're willing to wait a couple of weeks (or months, depending on where you live) for some of them to make the art house circuit. Five of them - "Of Time and the City", "Up", "Thirst", "District 9", and "The Hurt Locker" - are already out on DVD or will be in the next few weeks. "The Princess and the Frog" and "Fantastic Mr. Fox" are currently playing in most theaters. "Up in the Air" is opening wide on Christmas day, I believe.

"The White Ribbon" is another film by the often brilliant Michael Haneke and it won Palme d'or at Cannes this year. It should be making its way to the big cities in the next month or so, and on to some of the smaller areas after that (it's coming to where I live in Utah in February.) And "A Single Man" got pretty good reviews at the Toronto Film Festival and is just starting its limited release.

So you can't see them now, but they'll be making their way around over the coming months. And they are both worth seeing based on what I've heard.

So, Mo'Nique acting like a demon and playing the most stereotypical abusive parent, is better than the subtlety and menace of Christoph Waltz?

It's too bad the entirely CGI creation of Christopher Johnson isn't allowed, because he was more convincing than over half that list.

Since I thought Coraline was mediocre, this list gets +1 from me already!

I wasn't as hot on District 9 as everyone else here, but Sharlto Copely's performance deserves to be in the top 10 performances list.*

*doesn't matter if I have seen zero of the 10 movies in the performances list. :D
