2009 Year in Film | 82nd Oscars Discussion Thread -- 03.07.2010
I have been tracking the precursor awards and support for various films leading into 'Oscar season' for the past couple of years, and figure that with the NBR and indie spirit awards announcing it'd probably be time to kick into doing so this year for those interested.
Feel free to use this thread for discussing nomination/winner possibilities, your favourites of this year, etc as well.

Re: 2009 Year in Film | 82nd Oscars Discussion Thread -- 03.07.2010
Critical praise for the film rarely did not go hand-in-hand with raves for Waltz's performance... and the movie was a box-office hit so he also has that populous appeal. I'd say he's pretty much a lock, but it is still very early.

Hopefully...would really like to see him walk away with the statue. But it'd be even better for QT to grab the best director statue. I don't think I could take another vomit worthy Oscars like last year's. Precious seems to be this year's Slumdog...

I like this one better with all the year end critic's circles and groups. And get read to make room for Meryl Streep on that actress list. At this point, she's the actress to beat this year.

This year wasn't that bad, but the NBR top 10 is odd - extremely mainstream list. Though it is largely in tune with critical response -- RT %s:
Up - 98% w/ 248 Reviews
The Hurt Locker - 98% w/ 165 Reviews
Star Trek - 95% w/ 275 Reviews
The Cove - 95% w/ 107 reviews
An Education - 94% w/ 154 reviews
The Messenger - 91% w/ 64 reviews
Inglourious Basterds - 88% w/ 250 Reviews
500 Days of Summer - 87% w/ 185 reviews
A Serious Man - 87% w/ 160 Reviews
Invictus - 86% w/ ....7 reviews.
Up in the Air - 85% w/ 75 Reviews.
Where the Wild Things Are - 72% w/ 200 Reviews
In the Loop - 95% with 128 reviews
District 9 - 90% with 232 reviews
Moon - 89% with 158 reviews
Julia - 73% with 48 reviews
Glad to see Julia (Swinton was fantastic in it), Moon and In The Loop get some recognition. Loved Star Trek - it was pure entertainment. And Inglourious Basterds is one of my favorite films of the decade. Hopefully Up In The Air lives up to its long running (since Jan of this year) hype and doesn't get shit all over because of it (Juno).
I liked Up much more on a repeat viewing, but there's still too many flaws in it to ignore. I much preferred The Fantastic Mr. Fox.
Woody Harrelson as Best Supporting Actor? Awesome.

Here are a handful of films I've thoroughly enjoyed this year in place of a top 10 (as I haven't seen many of the 'December Oscar Slate'):
Black Dynamite
The Hurt Locker
The Messenger
Mother
A Prophet
The White Ribbon
Black Dynamite
The Hurt Locker
The Messenger
Mother
A Prophet
The White Ribbon

wow, a lot of crap in there. Hurt Locker was painfully boring to watch and should be no where near a top film list.

Is Christoph Waltz an Actor or a Supporting Actor? Since all the actors in Inglorious Basterds have equal screen time, Christoph Waltz should be nominated as Best Actor, instead of Supporting Actor. Out of everyone in that film, Christoph Waltz seemed like he had the most screentime in that film than everyone else.

The character itself, IMO, was a supporting character despite the amount of screentime he had. Shosanna and Aldo were the leads.
It's a tougher call for movies like A Perfect Getaway where

I agree. Also, in terms of chances for Waltz actually winning, the Actor field is looking far more crowded with the likes of Clooney, Freeman, Firth and Day-Lewis. His best shot is for Supporting Actor and we'd better hope the Weinsteins will promote him in that category.

What the flipping fuck!? No kidding! The word boring and "The Hurt Locker" should never be allowed in the same sentence. There were so many intense scenes in that film, it was almost unnerving.
