Yea... I started a thread about that last year. They are becoming way too similar.

More and more over the past decade or so, as many more indy films have been getting Oscar nods.

This is always a fun show to watch - not as fun as the Golden Globes, but much more laid back than the Oscars. The hosts (Kristen Bell and Fred Armisten) were awful this year, but sometimes they'll get someone who's really good (Patton Oswalt did it last year).

The 2019 Spirit Awards air today. Aubrey Plaza is the host. Nominees are here: https://www.filmindependent.org/spirit-awards/nominees/

This is usually my favorite awards show. The nominees this year fall more into line with my favorites / how some of the Oscars should’ve looked, IMO.

Last year between Picture, Director, Actor and Actress there were nine nominations that were also Oscar Nominations. This year there was one : Glenn Close.
I guess Roma (and BlackkKlansman) were considered ineligible?
edit : Klansman was nominated in Supporting Actor, so I guess they just didn't like it in the others. Roma had to be ineligible- I wonder if it was because it was foreign language or because of the Netflix funding.

Their eligability process is weird now, but anything that's deemed dominate seems to be excluded now.

I'm going to try tracking this down. The Oscars bum me out at this point. Also, I have only seen clips, but Glenn Close chews every last bit of the scenery in what I saw of her nominated performance. It felt very Oscar baity.

What they show is "baity" but that is the very end of the movie and an explosion of a lifetime of shit. It builds over the course of the movie. It is a great performance.

Uncut Gems is only moving higher and higher on my need-to-see list.

Interesting that Wild Nights With Emily is still getting mentioned; I showed it at a film festival in June of 2018, and this festival ain't exactly Sundance, Cannes, or Tribeca.

Marriage Story is going to hit Nexflix in early December, so I'll be catching that one. Looks like another big year for Adam Driver.

A Hidden Life looks fantastic. Hopefully it will play in my area.

Kumail Nunjiani and Kate McKinnon were good hosts but maybe too big now to host again.

Aubrey Plaza will host for the second consecutive year and I can live with though she does not come across as a big movie fan.

Re: Independent Spirit Awards -- Discussion Thread

The 36th annual Film Independent Spirit Awards are set for Thursday live at 10 p.m. ET/PT exclusively on IFC and AMC+, with Saturday Night Live‘s Melissa Villaseñor as host of the two-hour ceremony, which will be virtual this year because of the pandemic. In another twist from the norm, the Spirits this year moved off its traditional Saturday-before-the-Oscars date, a longtime staple. The event is traditionally held on the beach in Santa Monica.

Still, organizers are pulling out some virtual tricks in an effort to get close to what is always a laid-back, fun affair at the beach celebrating the best in indie film. Film Independent has teamed with virtual venue Looped to create and produce an interactive online equivalent of the Spirit Awards’ beach tent for “attendees,” who can venture to a curated cocktail hour (beginning at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT and featuring a DJ set by RuPaul’s Drag Race alums including Nina West), interact with guests at their “table” during the show, and rock out at karaoke-themed after-party. There is also a virtual backstage element hosted by Carla Renata and Angelique Jackson.

Also new this year: for the first time in history, the Spirit Awards will be recognizing outstanding achievement in uniqueness of vision, innovation and boldness of vision in TV and streaming as well as feature film.

Re: Independent Spirit Awards -- Discussion Thread

So judging by the Emerald Fennell nominations, I assume if your first film or first screenplay gets nominated in the main category, it's ineligible for the First Feature or First Screenplay award? That doesn't seem fair.

And how does Regina King not get a nomination in the Best First Feature award?

BTW : The Oscars need a Best First Feature award, asap.

I like that last idea. Would at least make it a little more hipper. It’s always been so fucking crusty. The GG is where the fun is or was or whatever. The Oscars while, of course, most noteworthy, credit worthy, epitome, what have you, really does need a fucking make over ASAP.

Re: Independent Spirit Awards -- Discussion Thread

The 37th annual Film Independent Spirit return to slightly more normal circumstances this year, with a reprised in-person event set to take place on the Santa Monica beach on Saturday, March 6. That means the nominations are here, amid a busy awards season week that has included the reveal of the revamped Golden Globes and the Critics Choice nominations for film. Below, see the full list of Independent Spirit nominees, as revealed by Beanie Feldstein, Regina Hall, and Naomi Watts, and watch the announcement video below.

Traditionally held the Saturday before the Oscars, the 2022 date marks a shift in the season, placing the Spirit Awards squarely in the corridor leading into Oscar voting (with final voting beginning on March 17). While historically an early afternoon affair, the 2022 ceremony will be held at 5 pm PST / 8 pm EST. The show will, as usual, be broadcast on the IFC channel.

Re: Independent Spirit Awards -- Discussion Thread

The Film Independent Spirit Awards are set to take place Sunday at 5 p.m. ET/2 p.m. PT at the Baker Hanger in Santa Monica. The annual shindig honoring the best in indie film will air live on IFC and stream for subscribers on AMC+.

This year’s show is also available for the first time at select AMC Theatres via the AMC Stubs program. In Canada, it will stream exclusively at hollywoodsuite.ca. On social media, live updates and content will be available via Film Independent (@filmindependent) and IFC (@ifc).

The ceremony is being hosted this year by Nick Offerman and Megan Mullally, who will preside over a show that will see winners announced in 16 competitive film categories and five in TV.

Show starts in less than an hour on IFC.

Can’t wait to see Simon Rex take home Best Actor in a terrific film, Red Rocket.

That would be awesome! Or Nic Cage but he probably wasn’t nominated.
