What movie am I thinking of? Asian action film
There was a movie called Omnioshi or something like that I saw a couple years ago, but I can't find the title. I know they made a sequal.
I am pretty certain that the spelling is similar to what I called it, if that helps.
Also, there was a movie trailer posted here years ago that had some incredible action sequences and the thread title or first post mentioned that it was the Asian Titanic or Independence day. I'm also wondering what that movie is/was.
Thanks.

probably Casshern. It was eventually released in the US, but in an edited 2 hour version, as the asian version is 2 and a half hours long, so if you can find it out there, go for that version.

If you like the look of 'Casshern' , you have to check out 'Goemon'.
What a visually amazing film, and I had a hell of good time watching it too. Just watched the Blu the other day.
Same directer: Kazuaki Kiriya, he's an auteur for the most part.

Japan version, came out in October. No english subs though.
http://www.yesasia.com/global/goemon...0-en/info.html
A French version (TF1) is supposed to come out soon but that probably won't help you in terms of subs either. So you might want to wait for an HK version.

Re: What movie am I thinking of? Asian action film
Goemon and Casshern are both complete crap, in my opinion. This is coming from someone with more than 50 Japanese movies in his DVD collection(*), who lives in Japan, and who is not an anime fan. If you're an anime fan, you may like those two movies.
I just watched Goemon (with English fansubs, synched to a Japanese region DVD, served to my PS3) and it is wall-to-wall posing and posturing. I can just see the crew working on it, all trying to top each other with what looks more cool. "No, wait, let his hair blow a little in the wind. Make him turn a little bit more to the left. A little more stubble--make-up!! THAT's it. OK, let's move onto the next pose--uh, I mean "scene!" " And don't even get me started on Gori's part. Third only to Jar-Jar Binks and Lost in Space's Blarp for characters that need to be edited out and digitally erased. The only decent role in the movie was Takao Osawa, who played Saizo. Yosuke Eiguchi (Goemon)'s reactions ranged from "I'm so cool and care-free, nothing can touch me" one minute to "I'm so tortured and filled with angst" the next, from "freedom is everything, and responsibility is for suckers" one minute to "I'm intensely loyal to the promise of a new Japan, and I will sacrifice everything for it" the next. Some people would say that makes the character complex. I say it makes the movie bad. The Playstation-2-era CGI was also very impressive. I'd rather watch the Neo-fights-1000-Smiths scene a hundred times in a row before watching this movie again.
(*) Kurosawa stuff, and some other Criterions, Death Note, Ringu, Battle Royale, Azumi, Zatoichi (old and new), Yomigaeri, Wonderful Life, Gojoe, Takeshi Kitano stuff, Owl's Castle, Hidden Blade, When the Last Sword is Drawn, Akakage (Red Shadow), and many others, but I wanted to give you a variety to see where I'm coming from, and not just write me off as some kind of Japanese film cinema snob.

Opinions run strong on those movies I suppose.
I had a blast watching 'Goemon'.
A whole 50 DVD's from Japan?
Wow.

I liked GOEMON and I have over 50 Japanese movies in my DVD collection(*). There's an English-subtitled DVD of it floating around in smaller DVD stores that shows the new "hot" Asian flicks.

Re: What movie am I thinking of? Asian action film

Over 50 again!!!

Considering Cheato found the development of a character only concerned with himself and following his flights of fancy into someone who learns to care about others and understands sacrifice over the course of a movie a 'lame plot hole' that "makes the movie bad", I'm not surprised he didn't like the movie. That's a pretty common and basic plot theme in a film btw, nothing new.
I believe I would have just said 'I didn't like it' and stopped there before I embarrassed myself if I were in that situation. This movie isn't a 'Citizen Kane' with subtle themes and the like. This stuff about the changes in Goemon's attitude and why they happened were spelled out quite clearly.
Anyway... I had a blast watching it too.

I think we need to start a "Who has more than 50 Japanese films in their collection" thread. That way if someone says anything about a Japanese movie we'll know if they are a certified Japanese cinema expert. Maybe we could add a little Rising Sun symbol for those users to denote this level of expertise.

Re: What movie am I thinking of? Asian action film
Wow, you guys are really missing the point of my post. I get that you're going for humor at this point, but let's get real for a moment.
I was not trying to impress anybody with anything.
First of all, trying to impress anyone on a forum is a ridiculous concept.
Secondly, trying to impress anyone in a movie discussion forum is even more ridiculous.
Finally, trying to impress anyone with the status of your collection (number or titles) is immeasurably ridiculous.
As stated in my post, I was merely trying to explain where I was coming from, so that my opinion could be heard (just like yours) and understood in context, instead of just dismissed. Of course, apparently, any kind of opinion around here is dismissed, as long as it isn't agreed with. Please notice that I couched everything in terms of opinion, instead of absolutes. And I included a number of points that irritated me about the movie, not just one. Where one person sees "character development," another sees "lame attempt to give depth to an unrealistic and unbelievable character."
So pile on, ladies and gentlemen.
