Re: Drive In movie theatres - do they still exist ?

One opened up in my area earlier this year: http://www.goochlanddriveintheater.com/

Unfortunately, I didn't get out there this season, but I really want to check it out. Their site says that they're planning on showing Elf and It's a Wonderful Life for a few days in December. Interesting concept, but I don't know if I'd want to watch a movie in my car during the winter.

The drive-in in Mendon, MA reopened this week. I think the price went up to $25 for the double feature, but the wife and I will probably try to get there to see something this summer.

$25 each or for the two of you? The few drive-ins I've been to in recent years have been priced from $5-10 a person for a double feature and occasionally have a "carload" rate on special nights.

/\ $25 per carload. Not a great deal, but depending on the movies could be worth it.

For first-run, not-yet-on-DVD films, that's a great deal, especially for a family.

We have a drive-in here in Tulsa that is being rebuilt after a fire destroyed the screen. It was one of the locations they filmed at for the movie The Outsiders.

There is one here in San Jose,CA. A bit run down but I love going to it every once in a while. Sometimes it's the only option since there's a baby in the house. It also helps that it's not too far away.

We've still got a drive in here - it is sometimes fun to go - they do have 'carload' nights where it's only $15. I have fond memories of going to 'all-nighters' with my family, watching 4 movies in a row at the drive in, so I'm glad it's still kicking around http://www.mustangdriveinguelph.ca

Man, I really miss Drive-In Theaters. We used to have the Kam Drive-In here in Hawaii, but it closed in 1998. I have a lot of good memories of that place. The younger generation doesn't know what it's missing. Good to know that there are so many still in operation on the mainland, though.

Our local drive-in is $15 for a carload unless a certain studio sets a higher rate. They do a double feature but primarily show PG movies to draw in the families.

Both drive-ins are $8.00 for people 12 and over - $3.00 for children 5-11 and children 4
and under are free. This is for two movies. The Transit Drive-In prices show up on the
site when you click on the "Now Showing" link - they should list them on the front page -
while the Sunset Drive-In prices are listed underneath the marquees on the front page.

My cousin and her family (husband and three kids) usually hit the Transit Drive-In once per month.

Re: Drive In movie theatres - do they still exist ?

I noticed since my last post that the WesMer Drive-In near me has raised its prices. It used to just be $5 per car, but now that price is only good on Tuesday. Any other day is $10 per car, but that's still a pretty killer price for a double feature.

I can't imagine going to it again, though, since I set up something in my backyard, but it's nice to know it's there.

Chicago suburbs

(I didn't look to see if this was posted already, but given the business climate for something like this it doesn't hurt to update).

Vali Hi Drive-In
Ours just opened up for the season a few weeks ago. Can't wait to go back!

Re: Drive In movie theatres - do they still exist ?

My local drive in has been open for 10+ years and has recently expanded to 3 screens. I just found out last year that they play older movies one weekend a year (I think its Labor Day). I got to see Back to the Future, Jaws, and Grease on the big screen in a triple feature.

Any in the NYC area? Last I checked it was at least an hour or two drive from here. Anyone know if there are any in DC or New Orleans?

Ok I am blown away that the Transit Drive-In is still open. I grew up just outside of the area in southern Niagara County and as long as I was growing up, people were saying it was going to close.

Nice to see it's still thriving. I never heard of the Sunset Drive-In, though.

Are these drive-ins still projecting film? I have horrible thoughts of them buying digital projectors and showing DVDs (like some theatrical retrospectives have been known to do).

I've never seen a second-run drive-in. They always show the films that are in traditional theaters so unless I don't see how that would ever be a problem. Not only that but most drive-ins haven't been updated since the 80s so I don't see them upgrading to digital projections anytime soon.

Ours showed Hunger Games and Wrath of the Titans last weekend, so I'm guessing no.
