I like The Incredibles, but Shrek 2 was also excellent. It could have gone either way.

Wow, I just watched 40 minutes of Mary and Max on YouTube but it was just all taken off! Fuck, it was good too.

If you look for it you can find it elsewhere online.

Just sayin'...

My appreciation only grows for that film.

As for Coraline (which I had to search through this thread to figure out what your were referring to. Come on people if you're quoting that far back mention the name of the movie) I'd put it at least on the level of UP as far as me loving it. That film took great chances for a children's film and for that alone I appreciate it. It helps that the emotions ring true and that visually it's positively gorgeous. I would have no problem if it won over UP. I don't think dreary is a negative for that film (it was intentional as far as I could tell and worked within the context), and it wasn't even a little boring. I left that film with a very big smile on my face.
I don't know, I think the pieces are there for Shrek. Personally for Monster's Inc, I didn't care much for Boo so the emotion wasn't there for me but I can easily see how it would be there for most others. I like what Shrek did with the fairy tale stuff and while I the highs don't reach as high as they should have been with Shrek/Fiona, I still dug it. Probably just a personal thing with me because I found the fairy tale character stuff more fascinating then the monsters.

I feel that (although it deserves it IMO) if Coraline wins, it'll more of an award to honor Selick, and his contribution to bringing back stop-motion.

Why even bother... UP has this one in the bag. I don't know why people have a problem with this film at all... it's the most emotionally fulfilling and deep movie Pixar has ever made, IMHO.

The only other contender I can see is The Fantastic Mr. Fox (which I think looks FANTASTIC [pun] but has yet to open in Austin) and by a long shot Coraline.

I do think Mary and Max will be among the nominees however.

I don't have a problem with UP. I just think CORALINE is better. And I'm an admitted, drooling, and hyperventilating Pixar fanboy.

I have yet to see MR FOX, but given the subject matter and the crew behind it, we might have yet another contender. I also enjoy a blumpkin.

Hated Happy Feet. Preachy, smaltzy, and just annoying.

You're more right than you know. When the category was in its infancy, the Stuart Little films were eligible, since 75% or more of the films utilized CGI animated characters.

I totally agree. That year I liked Shrek way more then Monsters Inc. While the original Shrek has stood up a lot better then any of it's sequels it doesn't have the subtlety the Monsters Inc has. Now I think Monster's Inc is the far better movie.

Over the weekend we watched a double Blu-Ray feature of Monsters Inc and Up. I had always really liked Monsters but never "loved" it. Watching it again, I'm amazed at how much I COMPLETELY adored it... the characters, the world, the humor, the pacing, the imagination... wow. Anyone who isn't completely emotionally vested in these characters by the end of the movie has no heart whatsoever and is in fact part turnip.

Up! is still a great movie, as good as I remembered it. But I still prefer Coraline.

There is no way UP can lose. The only time Pixar lost was with Monsters Inc to Shrek (which was a breakout phenomenon) and Cars to Happy Feet (one of Pixar's weakest)

Coraline's okay, but I love Ponyo, MvA and Meatballs more. Up is just in a league of it's own - my #3 animated movie ever.

The newest Pokemon movie premieres on the Cartoon Network this Friday. Does that make it eligible? If so, it's the hands-down winner and this entire thread loses its relevance.

To be far, that's only a 67% average. (6 nominations, 4 wins)

Re: 20 Animated Features Line Up for 2009 Oscar® Race

surprisingly this has been a really strong year for animated films - my faves being Ponyo, Up, Coraline and Fantastic Mr. Fox - all I consider being "excellent" My fingers are crossed that Princess and the Frog looks as good as the trailers suggest.

Happy Feet was, imho, unwatchable. But it had a "green" message which means it wins in the eyes of the academy.

I really dug Happy Feet. I was pleasantly surprised by it when I saw it in the theater.

Re: 20 Animated Features Line Up for 2009 Oscar® Race

saw Mary and Max last night at the DC Jewish Film Festival and the movie just floored me - It's definately in my top ten of the year and while I can say alot about this movie, one, it's definately not for kids and secondly I wasn't prepared for how the movie was going to effect me emotionally.

Well, the category did turn out to be surprising. No one called "The Secret of Kells." Miyazaki is out and Wes Anderson is in?!
