Re: 20 Animated Features Line Up for 2009 Oscar® Race
here's a link to what 'A Town Called Panic' is about - talk about surreal - I sooo wanted to see this last Saturday, but wasn't in town to see it
This surreal adventure in stop-motion animation and oddball comedy is the feature film spin-off of the Belgian TV series, which enjoys an international cult following, (and has been aired in dubbed version on Nicktoons). Three Plasticine characters, Cowboy, Indian and the sensible but temperamental Horse, navigate a series of manic adventures, from Cowboy and Indian's Internet birthday barbeque that wrecks their house, to the trio's travels to the center of the earth, the arctic tundra, and an underwater realm populated by perfidious pointyheads. Co-directors Stéphane Aubier and Vincent Patar supply most of the manic voice talent, with guest spots given to Jeanne Balibar (VA SAVOIR) and Benoît Poelvoorde (MAN BITES DOG). Fans of Art Clokey's Gumby, MONTY PYTHON'S FLYING CIRCUS, SOUTH PARK and ROBOT CHICKEN will find much to like. (from AFI Silver EU Film Festival program)

Also after seeing A Christmas Carol I would certainly give that a nomination. It was much better than I expected and the animation was fantastic.
Ponyo should not receive a nomination imo. It's a decent film but I was pretty meh on the whole thing.

I think RichC2 is right, Up suffered too much of an identity crisis to qualify for Best Pic(1st half was some of the best the year had to offer, the second half-some of the worst). They should submit for the Animated for a higher probability of winning.

My sister's father-in-law is one of the higher people up at the Magic Kingdom. Every now and then, they get to sit in and watch a new movie before it's released, if it has anything to do with the park. My sister invited me and my family to go see it. The movie was great. It's good to see an animated musical like they used to do. With alot of jazz.

Glad somebody agrees with my take on Up (half great adult drama/adventure, half sub-par saturday morning adaptation), but I know we're in the minority on that one.

I thought I was too, given the opinions in it's movie thread. Boring and dreary is a perfect description of the film.
Meanwhile, Shrek always gets poor remarks on these forums. I enjoy it more then Monster's Inc, and the whole "pop culture" spin on it is actually pretty minor in the first movie. I think it holds up just fine.

You just got added to a number of ignore lists, and you should brace yourself for an incoming barrage of angry PMs.

As for Coraline (which I had to search through this thread to figure out what your were referring to. Come on people if you're quoting that far back mention the name of the movie) I'd put it at least on the level of UP as far as me loving it. That film took great chances for a children's film and for that alone I appreciate it. It helps that the emotions ring true and that visually it's positively gorgeous. I would have no problem if it won over UP. I don't think dreary is a negative for that film (it was intentional as far as I could tell and worked within the context), and it wasn't even a little boring. I left that film with a very big smile on my face.

I disliked Shrek (moreso the sequels than the original, although the first IS aging poorly as hell) but really liked Cars. As such, I'm only going to pee in half of Fu's Ovaltine.
