I've seen many movies that I consider quite lackluster, but have a moment or two that are quite impressive; sometimes to the point you feel it doesn't belong in that movie.

Some that spring to mind for me :

-Ali-boring for the most part, but the whole Rumble in the Jungle sequence at the end is great.

-Godzilla' 98- the helicopters chasing Zilla through New York

-Transformers 2- any of the scenes with Prime kicking ass

-Revenge of the Sith - opening battle and Obi Wan vs. Anakin

-The birth of the Sandman in Spider-Man 3
-The airplane save in Superman Returns
-The last shot of Gangs of New York
-The T-Rexes attacking the mobile command center in The Lost World

CONSPIRACY THEORY - the one with Mel Gibson and Julia Roberts.
I liked the scene where she examines all the paranoid stuff on the wall in Mel's apartment. The look on her face tells us everything we need to know without dialogue.

The opening musical number in HAIRSPRAY.

The final musical number in CHICAGO (the Zellweger/Zeta Jones duet).

And I'm speculating that there will be an impressive moment or two in what I'm speculating will be an otherwise lackluster production from James Cameron...AVATAR.

Transformers 2 may rank as one of the shittiest films I have ever witnessed, but goddamn, that whole chase sequence through the college, the streets, the warehouse and the woods is the only decent portion of that film.

I have always thought the sacrificial sequence in the 1976 King Kong was very well done in the way it builds to his appearance with the trees falling and slight flashes of his face.

Any time Wolverine (or young Wolverine) was cradling the dead body of a loved one, he would extend his claws, turn his face to the sky, and scream "NOOOOO!!!!!" like Homer Simpson. This was so awesome, they did it TWICE!!! What classic moviemaking.

as most of this film was dog caca - I thought the opening battle and forest battle were impressive.

the dance party body bisection scene in Ghost Ship was very cool - the rest of the movie - meh!

I agree completely - I tried recently to rewatch this on home video and the movie was just ordinary when it's not projected (and that scene in particular) in IMAX.

No way Heat is a lackluster film. I'd also argue that Watchmen and the Last Samurai don't deserve that title either.

While I agree with you, this thread will rely upon what constitutes a lackluster movie in other people's minds. I know some people might not consider Ali lackluster, but I do. I almost agree on Last Samurai if it weren't for the fog scene and the final battle.

In my opinion, Heat is a lackluster film. Granted it's not Transformers 2, but it ain't Citizen Kane either.

The explosion/hostage scene at the beginning of Swordfish was pretty cool, rest of the movie was pretty eh.

Agreed. I watched this again last night and that opening never fails to amaze me. The rest of the movie is okay but it pales in comparison to the opening.
