He's been ranting about Saw VI, Paranormal Activity and District 9 in a bunch of threads. Seems very odd.

I watch Paranormal Activity last night and thought it was really overrated and most of the people coming out thought the same. Not that its a bad movie, its just way over hyped. There was a lot of build up with no payoff, exactly like Blair With.

Pretty amazing feat for PA considering Saw is in 1000 more theaters, is a 6 year old franchise, and had a huge advertising campaign.

Looks like Blair Witch's total BO take is up for grabs.

You're watching a found video that specifically lays it out that they're thanking the family of the people who are on it for giving paramount the permission to release it. While it's staged, it's in a sense role playing.

So right off the bat you know that something seriously grave happens to them. No matter if you want to admit it or not, the viewing audience is watching was is essentially a snuff film.

It may not be as graphic or as blood filled as saw, but don't mistake what you're watching as anything more than a couple's last known footage. Even if it is at the hands of some demon.

Isn't a snuff film a motion picture that depicts the death or murder of a person or people, for the express purpose of distribution and entertainment or financial exploitation. We're just told that Katie's whereabouts are unknown. There wasn't some hot line to call (which would have been a pretty good marketing campaign and ARG) at the end to report if you've seen some possessed chick starting fires and burning Parker Brothers games. So it was simply laid out to view this couple get tortured (oh, there's that word again) by some mystic force.

Anyone calling the SAW franchise crap while praising PA is pointing one finger while four more point back at them.

Is it just because its supposed to be home video that's bothering you about PA, because pretty much your entire post could be said about every horror movie. I think you're making up your own definition of torture porn.

Or, considering what De Niro puts Stiller through in the movie, Meet the Parents.

Yeah, I don't get the PA-torture porn connection, either.

I understand why you're saying that Paranormal Activity is torture porn, but I'm telling you you can't, because "torture porn" has a definable meaning that specifically includes the gore. The term was devised to describe a specific thing, and you can't just change that. You also twist the word torture: Katie and Micah are (generally) not in pain, which is key to torture, but terrified. Maybe you could coin the term "terror porn".

You also have the incorrect definition of a snuff film. A snuff film is a film that depicts real-life murder. The Faces of Death series is mostly notoriously fake, but there are supposedly one or two actual deaths in there. That is a snuff film.

Re: Weekend Box Office - Oct 23 - 25, 2009 - Bet nobody Saw this coming...

While the debate rages on

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com. Final figures will be released Monday.

1. ''Paranormal Activity,'' $22 million.

2. ''Saw VI,'' $14.8 million.

3. ''Where the Wild Things Are,'' $14.4 million.

4. ''Law Abiding Citizen,'' $12.7 million.

5. ''Couples Retreat,'' $11.1 million.

6. ''Astro Boy,'' $7 million.

7. ''The Stepfather,'' $6.5 million.

8. ''Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant,'' $6.3 million.

9. ''Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs,'' $5.6 million.

10. ''Zombieland,'' $4.3 million.

This time, horror fans simply gravitated toward "Paranormal Activity" instead of "Saw VI."

"`Paranormal' ate their lunch," said Paul Dergarabedian, box-office analyst for Hollywood.com. "There's no other way to explain it."

After four weeks in narrower release, Paramount slotted "Paranormal Activity" into 1,945 theaters. That still was just under two-thirds of the 3,036 theater count for "Saw VI."

"Paranormal Activity" raised its total haul to $62.5 million. The low-budget movie was shot for a reported $15,000 but has become a horror sensation because of online fan buzz. The fictional movie unfolds like a homemade documentary as a couple copes with apparitions and supernatural phenomena in their home.

It has a strong shot at topping $100 million, something none of the "Saw" movies ever managed. While "Saw," the grisly saga of a puppetmaster putting victims through savage moral tests, was embraced as a fresh twist by horror fans five years ago, it now is part of the Hollywood establishment compared to "Paranormal Activity."

"There's no question `Paranormal' offered a fresh alternative," said Rob Moore, Paramount vice chairman. "This movie definitely has achieved a place in our culture right now."
Sucks for Saw because VI was a lot better than the last 2. But I think the establishment quote sums it up best. Too much too quick?

Don't see it happening. PA might hit $100 million but BW's total BO was $285 million.

If Saw manages to gross $40-45M domestically, it's still going to be regarded as a hit.

Actually:

$148 million domestic
$100 million worldwide
$248 million complete total

Paramount needs to put PA on more screens next weekend, because I feel the next weekend total will have a drop of 50% or more based upon the PSA for the last three weeks. I don't see what's stopping Paramount from throwing this onto 500 more screens next weekend, especially with This Is It being the only major opener.

Paranormal activity is definitely not torture porn or anything near it. There's barely any blood in it. On the other hand, any of the Saw movies or Hostle or Tourista, you pretty much expect, people being..."Tortured" and bloodied.

Paramount may produce 'Paranormal Activity' sequel

CHUD.com has a great article on that idea:

PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 2: THE BOOK OF SHADOWS

The best part:

It seems obvious that a sequel to this movie is a terrible fucking idea. Just make another low budget horror film. Just learn the lessons of Paranormal Activity and apply them to future films instead of being lazy and greedy and trying to clone the first. This is the main problem with Hollywood - instead of learning lessons from successes they simply try to remake the success. And it never works out, creatively or financially.

Blair Witch Project came out in 1999. These no budget horror turned blockbusters happen once a decade. Obviously, it's easier to make a sequel.

I remember last year were SAW V capitalizes on its unexpected ending during TV spots, if they only made it for this year it would be better to invite audiences.

Re: Weekend Box Office - Oct 23 - 25, 2009 - Bet nobody Saw this coming...

SAW VI total < SAW V opening weekend

Saw had a 3.02 multiplier - 18.3 OW / 55.2 total
Saw II had a 2.74 multiplier - 31.7 OW / 87.0 total
Saw III had a 2.39 multiplier - 33.6 OW / 80.2 total
Saw IV had a 1.99 multiplier - 31.8 OW / 63.3 total
Saw V had a 1.88 multiplier - 30.1 OW / 56.7 total

Saw VI opened at 14.8M. Total 26.3M with a multiplier of 1.77

Even with a Saw I multiplier, it wouldn't even crack 45M

This absolutely sucks!!!

I'm not even sure Faces of Death would qualify based on the few real deaths, since they are "caught-on-film" types or accidents. To be a true snuff film, I believe it has to be a murder carried out for the film.

With or without blood, the point is that you're watching death and it's not like you're routing for the victims here. You're more than going for the anti-hero in both.
"Ha! When will that wacky demon pop out and scare the shit out of that douche bag?"

Hell, Hostle and Tourista are both fake. So did you just undefine them as torture porn/snuff films because their fake? I like the definition of "Porn" as anything you get tired of after you've masturbated to. In the case of PA, the reason why that alternative ending didn't work is because it doesn't end with Micah dying and that "money shot" of him getting tossed at the camera. You're sitting there waiting for Katie to.. well, sit there. By then you've pretty much lost all interest. It's like actually hearing the story of a porno tape.

you have absolutely no idea what torture porn is, do you? just admit it. it's ok.
So then define it, big man. Is there a Websters dictionary text book definition for it?

It just seems silly that people will be getting on a high moral horse in saying one is of more quality than the other. They both have very thing plots and the whole purpose of seeing them is to see what happens to the victims in them.

I'm not even sure Faces of Death would qualify based on the few real deaths, since they are "caught-on-film" types or accidents. To be a true snuff film, I believe it has to be a murder carried out for the film.
Yeah, pretty much. The point is a lot of people who are trying to justify PA as a better quality film than the SAW franchise (which I really can't say I gave a shit about anyway, they're all interchangeable as forgettable) are fooling themselves.

If you enjoy one over the other, that's fine. Personal taste. But it's like saying Burger King is a much higher quality burger than McDonalds. In the end you're still eating fast food.

Hell, the news that there's potentially talk of a sequel should show you that it's all the same. People are remembering the BO of Blair Witch but they seem to have overlooked that terrible sequel. Even if both have a pretty tiny budgets.
