Why is "Amelia" only playing in 800 theaters nationwide?

I have wanted very much to see Amelia since I saw the trailer. Now, I come to discover that it's not even being released here, only playing at 800 screens total nationwide. And yet, total crap like Saw VI and Cirque du Freak get over 3000 screens each. What is the logic in not putting Amelia in as many theaters? Are Hillary Swank and Richard Gere not as big box office draws as they used to be? Or will a wider release be forthcoming?

Deeming from the reviews, sounds like it ranks up there with total crap like Saw VI and Cirque du Freak.

People don't like watching stuff that isn't torture porn or demons killing douche bag day traders. So blame your fellow man.

In fact, why don't you kidnap a hand full of them and run them through a SAW style torture course to teach them a lesson in appreciating the art films.

Do the math...

Hilary Swank + Richard Gere + feminist history lesson = "boxoffice poison"

Smart theater owners are staying far away from this turkey. And it's not good enough for the arthouses.

Now, if only they'd done what Ben Stiller did and cast Amy Adams in the role.

I was really looking forward to this but the reviews are pretty bad. I will probably see it anyway.

Does this really deserve a separate thread?

Spoiler:
No.

It's a Fox Searchlight film, which is a specialty releasing firm. This was never going to get a wide release of thousands of theaters, unless it blew up after the fact like Juno.

The only theater it's playing at here is an art house.

Sometimes if studios have a movie that they feel has potential, they release it in larger cities first to build buzz and not have it get knocked out by more mainstream competition. This gets more common towards December. On the other hand, if they have a complete turkey (which it looks like this truly is), they want to keep the humiliation to a minimum. I have a feeling their original plan for doing this is my former explanation, but it's going to wind up being the latter.

After checking out the reviews, I think you're right.

Re: Why is "Amelia" only playing in 800 theaters nationwide?

Just saw this. It was ok in the flying scenes and made me want to do some reading up on her. Also it was interesting seeing the marketing going on back in the 30s. But the movie was kind of flat. There was no real chemistry between the actors and barely touched on her as to her motivations. Sort of like a tv movie bio-pic. If you are into historic aviation it's worth a look, but it is no great film.

They should have let Amy Adams reprise her role.
