His list includes 2 films on my top ten overrated list, CLERKS and TITANIC.
I agree with others that APOCALYPSE NOW is definitely not overrated...in fact it was underrated when it first came out and has grown in stature over the years.

I have not seen this movie either, however i cannot compare it against Private Ryan without seeing both. So if you are never going to see the movie then you will never truly be able to say that it was a travesty.
Private Ryan should however be on this list. I felt Band of Brothers was a great series, but this movie was just boring.

Re: Top Ten Overrated Movies
There are alot films made before 1979 that are overrated like Paper Moon (Tatum O'Neal winning an oscar did nothing for her carrer).
Let try The Jerk (1979) with Steve Martin that was funny back-in-day (watched a few months back) and now it's has now charm and is deadly slow and just not funny!
The Magnificent Ambersons (1942) I love the works of Orson Welles but this movie bored me to tears after years of people telling this is a classic you have got see this flim.
I then watched it and man what a let down maybe it's because we have never seen the full version of this film (Touch Of Evil comes to mind) but that's beside the point it's just so flat and has no heart to it.
A classic of what? the acting is less than steller, the mood is of flim cold I can't see how so many are in love with this flim.
Touch Of Evil is a masterpiece The Magnificent Ambersons is just a good film and that's all it's is.

Re: Top Ten Overrated Movies
I agree w/ him completely on Training Day which has always been IMO the definition of "overrated" along w/ Denzel's performance. Also agree w/ Clerks. However even not being a big Scarface fan, it's inclusion on the list discredits everything, it's iconic for a reason. Also not being a big Tarantino fan at all, it's just too easy & typical to put a Tarantino movie on any overrated list. Titanic I feel if anything is underrated, it's so trendy to hate on the movie, that if anything people automatically dismiss that it is is a monumental piece of pure, classic epic filmmaking.
Personally I feel the most overrated films of the past 10 + years are:
Slumdog Millionaire,
Spider-Man
The Sixth Sense
American Beauty
Batman Begins (yeah, I said it)

Re: Top Ten Overrated Movies
Normally i'm all for overrated lists, there's a lot of praised crap that needs to sit down and eat some humble pie, but some of the reasonings here didn't make sense.
Seems the writer forgot the show had as much serious as campy episodes and the movie series was just reflecting this. You already got your helping of serious with 2 and 3 and why complain when ONE entry is more lighthearted? The others would go back to serious again after this. "bring back Khan!" just sounds like he's a teenager. This was an enjoyable movie, reminds me of the episode Assignment: Earth.
He just pointed out the point of the movie that it is all about excess, outlandish and going over the top, it's a reflection of the 80s itself. The excuse of not holding up today is so dumb, many great movies probably wouldn't because they are reflections of their own times and movements. It is an amalgam of 80s excess. It may not be the best but it's probably the definitive 80s movie.
Watching this movie, the LAST thing on my mind was the star power, Brando is almost a cameo at the end, i was thinking about the apocalyptic atmosphere, visceral sounds and colors, definitely the best movie on Vietnam. And who gives a shit that it's not like the book, how many times do we have to say books=/=cinema, two different mediums with different strengths.I'm guessing he would also complain about The Shining not doing the book justice.

Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home 1986
Whales. Whales can connect with unknown aliens who are absolutely unstoppable, and are the only species who can save Earth, forcing time travel to 1980’s America. A very campy movie with a plot that questionable doesn’t even begin to describe. Let this one die quietly, bring back KHAN!

Scarface 1983
A lot of Al Pacino movies are overrated, and it’s not hard to argue that Pacino is consistently one of the most overrated actors in Hollywood. Look he’s screaming and cussing. I’d say again, but when did Pacino stop long enough to start up “again?” While this was a breakthrough film in the sense of violence, one has to wonder how this movie got its status. The F-word is used endlessly (so much for intelligent dialogue), the violence is way over the top, and there really are much better written drug, Mafia, or violent movies. This film might be legendary, but it’s hard to argue that this movie would still hold up if it was a brand new release.

Apocalypse Now 1979
Anyone who isn’t blown away by star power will see this for what it is: a sad boring film that doesn’t do “Heart of Darkness” any justice. This was terribly acted, stilted, and somehow managed to be ludicrously over dramatic without any drama. Yet this movie is widely considered one of the 100 best of all time and is lauded for its star power. “Apocalypse Now” is terribly overrated, and is on the top of this list as an example of a terrible movie that is lauded for its status over the film itself.

I agree that APOCALYPSE NOW is not overrated.
My list would include:
Forrest Gump
Chicago
Casino (wannabe Goodfellas)
Kramer vs. Kramer (BORING)
Ordinary People (I don't know how it beat Raging Bull)

Re: Top Ten Overrated Movies
You nailed some of these, especially Easy Rider & Boondock Saints which is such utter crap but people worship it. I have to strongly disagree though on NCforOM & Network which I like a lot & I can't believe I'm saying this, Forrest Gump. While that always has been & always will be, my least favorite movie of all time & a film I consider absolute torture to sit through, I would not call it overrated. It's the epitome of Hollywood drivel & I totally understand why people eat that stuff up. I was totally going to post Shawshank Redemption, another movie I can't stand, but I figured posting anything negative about that movie here is like insulting somebody's mother.

Re: Top Ten Overrated Movies
it comes to no surprise for me to state that "I" find 'Chasing Amy' more overrated than 'Clerks' but of course everyone on this board knows I have a disdain for it.
