According to an article at Moviefone.com, insiders are predicting that this could bring in $250 million in the first five days. The article says that Sony has already made back their $60 million investment through ticket presales alone.

I'll be at the Laker game tonight, while the madness will be going on across the street at LA Live for the premiere. Traffic should be wonderful.

I'm guessing that everyone who wants to see it has already bought their tickets. So whatever they got now...that's it, baby.

And what "insiders" would those be? Delusional members of Jackson's entourage or anxious execs at Sony? A $250 million gross in a week for a film like this is a big laugh. I read in the New York Times that Amy Pascal, the studio exec who approved the purchase, watched only 12 minutes of the footage before setting out to bid on the rights. Seems kind of reckless to me.

I agree that $250 million seems like wishful thinking, but if the advance ticket sales numbers are correct, this could be big. When the Hannah Montana concert film (another limited release event movie) opened, I think I read that Fandango sold a little less than 30% of the tickets. I know there are other means of obtaining advance tickets, but I don't think it's unreasonable to expect this to do at least $100 million in five days. Again, that's assuming that the story about advance ticket sales is true. In my opinion, that would be huge for this kind of movie.

I won't rule out seeing the movie on DVD or Blu-ray, but I don't have any plans to see it in the theater.

Sony bought the flick for $50 - $60m (which they've apparently already made back) so I'm assuming the company that produced it got a large chunk and the Jackson estate will get a share of it (this film was planned before Jackson's death.)

That's good to know. I kind of wanted to see it, but would have felt bad seeing it if they had just thrown it together after he died as a way to make money. But if it was planned from the start, then I think I may go see it after all.

Re: Michael Jackson's "Is This It": Do you care?

^ At least that's what I've read. Some other people claim it was meant as intermission material for the London concert, I personally think "made for tv" sounds most fitting. I'm sure they retooled it once he died, they apparently shot a TON of footage.

Pretty sure the $250m 5-day tally is meant to be international, it opens in pretty much every major market tomorrow thru Friday. It should be achievable.

The Hannah Montana "Limited Concert Film" made $31m opening weekend on 683 screens. This Is It should walk all over that.

With all that said, I have no intention of seeing this in theaters .

I'm not so sure it was planned in advance.

Michael Jackson's 'This Is It' film came about as "an accident".

Kenny Ortega - the choreographer behind the 50 planned London shows the 'King of Pop' was rehearing for when he tragically died in June - revealed the documentary was pieced together from private footage of the star rehearsing and was never intended to be released to the public.

He said: "The recordings were made so we could use them, then the tapes were destined for Michael's private library. They have a real unguarded honesty to them.

"At first I got so many messages from fans around the world asking to see the shows, asking to see the footage and eventually I realised the journey wasn't over and we had to do this.

"It is for the fans and the film will show the development and intentions of the show, and the concert as it moved closer to London."

It's certainly possible that they would have eventually released a film, but it likely would have been from one or more of the real performances, not the dress rehearsal footage. Maybe that's what RichC2 meant?

I didn't think of that. I would guess that $250 million is very possible world wide.

I can't imagine a film of the concert rehearsal was planned in advance. They were probably filming rehearsal footage as part of a larger project that would encompass the actual concerts.

Roger Ebert gave it 4 stars, if anyone cares (I don't, he hasn't been a trust-worthy critic for about 10 years)

Why because he rates movies based on how much he likes them instead of how well they're made? In that case, he's never been a trust-worth critic (this is the guy that hated Blue Velvet and gave Cop and A Half thumbs up.) His "trust-worthiness" hasn't changed all that much. It's all in how he defends or scrutinizes the movie.

Ebert is a big fan of Michael Jackson's so this isn't a surprise by any stretch. At least, that's what I gathered from that massive write up he had on the guy right after his death.

Most reviews seem to be saying it's an entertaining doc, surface-level only. No depth to speak of, works as a tribute more than anything.

The movie made $2.2m off midnight showings this morning (US only).

Me plus 24 others. That was it for the first showing today at a Manhattan theater.

I'm sure that fans (in the real FANATICAL sense of the word) will be pleased, but this is like two hours of mediocre DVD extras without a fast forward button.

In the US it might do OK business but I think overseas it'll do really well. We forget in this country how huge he still was everywhere else.

Liz Taylor is quoted that it's the BEST movie ever made - so maybe we all should see it!
