So, where do the gays going to the Comic-Con get to meet? "Wangs" for the men and "the Muffin Shop" for the ladies? Sorry boys, but stepping into a Hooters restaurant would probably result in me melting, or whatever happens to vampires when they aren't invited into your home.

What time are we meeting at Hooters? I'm going to get into Downtown sometime in the afternoon and have to pick up my badge, obviously.
There's a parking lot on 6th street, maybe six to eight blocks away from the convention center. $10 for all day parking. That's where I've been parking the last few years. Don't mind the walk and it's some of the cheaper parking I've been able to find, so I guess that will be my lot of choice again this year.
To me this Con is all about Scott Pilgrim. Aside from Thursday, where I'll be in Hall H all day (Tom, see you there at 3 AM), I'll be spending most of my time at the Scott Pilgrim experience (where you can get the shirts made) and the Oni Press booth. The only signing I care about is Bryan Lee O'Malley (although if John Barrowman is there I will definitely make a point of getting him to sign something). I've got other panels I want to see, but as long as I get to see the Scott Pilgrim panel, go to the experience area, and get O'Malley to sign my volume 6, I'll leave happy.

How so? I've been so out of the loop leading up to con this year since I got on getting a badge late and having the Hyatt flip comic con the bird. It's sort of a "rebuilding year" when it comes to going to con.
But how is San Diego pricing themselves out this year? I'm interested to hear yours and other's take.

But I DO have an understanding of how the City of San Diego is pricing themselves out of the Comic-Con. The Con is a non profit organization. The City of San Diego has been increasing the cost of renting out the Convention Center every year for more and more money. And the Con is capped at the amount of tickets they are allowed to sell. The Con can't raise the prices of their tickets the same proportions and as fast as the City is raising the prices of the Convention Center. With a fixed amount of tickets being sold and the city refusing to give on their price and refusing to expand the Convention Center (which would allow more tickets to be sold to cover the costs), something has to give.
The City doesn't realize that the Comic-Con is the equivalent to having 2-3 Superbowls in a year. Every year. 120,000 people converging on downtown for FOUR days (plus Preview night which is basically now another half day at full capacity). 120,000 people, spending money, paying taxes. Most (lucky) cities only get a Superbowl once every 10 years. Here in San Diego, we get the financial equivalent of 2-3 Superbowls in a week! Every year.

I don't quite understand the hotel situations. Supposedly the hotels are supposed to block off a certain amount of rooms for the Con. But so what? If you need a room, you're going to buy a room! They ALL end up selling out in a 20 mile radius anyways. If you want to pay more for a room that's not blocked off, you're going to pay more! This isn't Socialism (yet). It's not the City nor the Con's ultimate responsibility to provide hotel rooms (though it's the smartest thing for them to do).

Usually we meet after badges are picked up. My friend Mike is getting a press pass for the first time. It's a different line so not sure how long he will take. Txt me when you have your badge so we can figure things out. My number is the same.

OK, I'm also getting a press pass. The line for that is shorter, but moves at a snail's pace. I would hope I could be done by 4 PM if they open the doors at 3.

There's also some trademark placeholders for various trademarks for the Con in those cities.

Vegas and Anaheim have "bids" in. Substantial "bids". I don't know what that means if the Con is non-profit, but I guess there's more to it than money (i.e. convention space, hotel rooms, etc...)

If it's up in Anaheim, I would maybe go, but I'd be spending a lot less there because I'd have to pay for hotel rooms.

Anaheim just doesn't seem like it can hold the same amount or at least be the same. It has Disney across the street and that's its own mad house.
Truth be told, I like Sandy Eggo as the spot. It's 2 hours down and yet still feels like a get away. Vegas may have hotels up the wahzoo, but in the peak season for vegas the rates will be fairly bad and the crowds will be crazy.
If this was off peak season, maybe as CES is tough enough and it's not the crazy heat/crowd time.

I'll be there, of course.
Oh, a head's up for those driving down from the north. Today is also the opening day at the Del Mar Race Track. Doors there open at 11:30 and traffic could get quite heavy in that area probably around 10ish (I've never been so don't know how early people show up).

Oh crap, I've hit that traffic before. You're driving down the highway at a nice consistent fast speed, then BOOM, bumper to bumper traffic. Fuck that race track.

Badge pickup went very smooth. Instead of opening the line at 3:00 they opened at 1:30. Met up with Supr after badges and waited for Con to start. Right on the dot at 6:00 the doors opened.
And now I'm up at 2:20am getting ready to head back. Hall H awaits.

Going to drive down in about half an hour. Let's see if any parking lots are open at 5am. Then to see how I manage to get my badge and go to hall H line. :-/
